When employment opportunities failed to materialize, he refrained from giving up and instead chose farming as a full time profession on the advice of his family. By stepping into vegetable cultivation with a modern mindset, he is currently generating significant returns from okra farming and serving as a model of self reliance for nearby farmers.
Transition from Traditional Methods to Raised Bed Farming
When Sanjay Maurya first began his agricultural journey, he relied on conventional methods for planting okra. However, recognizing the need to optimize crop growth and field management, he began researching alternate techniques. By watching instructional agricultural content on YouTube and observing practices adopted by nearby farmers, he transitioned to the raised bed cultivation method. This technique involves creating elevated beds with spacious gaps between rows. The structure allows for much easier irrigation management and simplifies the manual harvesting process, saving both labor costs and operational time.
Low Capital Investment and High Financial Yields
Starting initially on a modest patch of land, Sanjay Maurya observed encouraging yields and favorable market prices, prompting him to expand his acreage progressively every season. At present, he cultivates okra across approximately 1 to 1.5 bigha of land. Detailed cost calculations reveal that preparing and maintaining an okra crop over 1 to 1.5 bigha requires an initial expenditure of just 8,000 to 10,000 rupees. Against this modest input cost, his seasonal earnings reach between 60,000 and 70,000 rupees. While total revenue fluctuates based on daily vegetable market rates, the overall profitability remains exceptionally strong.
Supply to Balrampur Market and Future Expansion Plans
To ensure prompt distribution and secure top prices for his harvest, Sanjay Maurya supplies his entire okra yield to the nearby Balrampur vegetable market. The high quality of his produce guarantees steady demand among traders and wholesale buyers. Encouraged by the consistent income generated from okra farming, he plans to expand his cultivation area even further in upcoming seasons, proving that technical education combined with modern farming techniques can unlock substantial livelihoods in rural areas.
