In Miyanpur village, situated within the Mohammadi tehsil of Lakhimpur Kheri district, women belonging to the local Bengali community are successfully generating their own income without stepping out of their homes. By integrating bidi manufacturing into their daily household routine, these women are substantially upgrading their family financial conditions while continuing to manage domestic responsibilities efficiently.
Flexible Home Work Model Supported by Material Suppliers
The operational framework in Miyanpur village allows women from several Bengali families to turn their spare hours into productive work. External suppliers visit the village directly to deliver all necessary raw materials right to the doorstep of these workers. Women then construct bidis at home according to their personal convenience and schedule. Once the production target is completed, the finished bidis are handed back to the suppliers, and payments are issued based on the exact quantity produced.
Sharing her experience, local resident Deepa from the Bengali community explained that previously she lacked any independent source of revenue. Leaving home for outside employment was extremely difficult due to childcare and domestic obligations. Receiving home-based bidi rolling work changed her situation, enabling her to actively contribute to her family financial welfare from within her house.
Production Metrics and Earnings Breakdown
Detailing the payout structure, Deepa stated that workers receive approximately 180 rupees for every 1,000 completed bidis. Because all essential materials are provided at home, there is no need for women to commute to external factories or shops. They are able to take care of domestic chores, attend to their children, and utilize remaining idle time to earn wages.
Regarding production speed, Deepa noted that a worker can comfortably roll around 200 bidis in one hour. Consequently, the village women earn daily income tailored to their individual capacity and time availability throughout the day. The complete flexibility of working hours makes this arrangement uniquely suitable for rural homemakers.

For the women of Miyanpur, this initiative represents much more than a routine daily wage, it stands as a meaningful step toward financial autonomy.
