Farmers in Bhagalpur district of Bihar are increasingly shifting away from traditional crop cultivation toward high value seasonal horticulture to boost their earnings. Among various seasonal cash crops, strawberry farming has gained substantial momentum across the region. However, the initial capital expenditure and the steep cost of quality saplings have long remained a primary hurdle for growers venturing into strawberry production.
Local Cultivation of Winter Dawn Variety
Addressing these economic constraints, local farmer Gunjesh Gunjan has taken a significant step toward making strawberry cultivation more accessible and affordable. He has successfully propagated the popular Italian strawberry variety known as Winter Dawn directly within Bhagalpur. Previously, local agriculturalists had no choice but to rely entirely on external state suppliers to meet their planting material requirements.
Cost Savings and Climate Adaptation
Historically, growers in Bihar sourced Winter Dawn saplings from Maharashtra at a rate of Rs 14 per plant, which incurred additional transit expenses and risk of sapling mortality. Gunjesh is now offering these locally raised plants to regional farmers at just Rs 10 per sapling. Because the plants are developed in the native climate, they demonstrate superior resilience, adapt rapidly after transplantation, and produce enhanced fruit quality.
Extended Harvesting Season and Storage Life
The Winter Dawn variety is particularly favored for its superior yield capability compared to alternative strains. A major advantage of this variety is its extended fruiting period, which continues reliably through the end of March. Furthermore, the harvested fruit possesses excellent shelf life and storage endurance, allowing produce to stay fresh longer during transport and distribution.
Market Accessibility and Consumer Benefits
The expansion of local strawberry farming has ensured a steady supply of fresh produce in nearby commercial hubs. Consumers in the region now enjoy convenient access to farm fresh strawberries at reasonable price points. This consistent consumer demand guarantees that local growers encounter no difficulty in selling their harvest promptly within neighboring markets.
