In the Sindhi Basti locality of Burhanpur district in Madhya Pradesh, a small gift gallery shop has grown into a story of grit and family enterprise. Pankaj, who completed his M.Com, chose not to look for a job after finishing his studies and instead followed the path his father inspired him to take, building a business from scratch. That decision now supports 25 people through direct employment.
A father's inspiration became a business plan
Pankaj says the idea of opening a gift gallery shop came from his father. Rather than searching for a job after completing his studies, he decided to build on the family's business idea. About 25 years ago, he took a loan of ₹50,000 to start the shop. At the time, there was neither large capital nor much experience, only his father's trust and his own determination to make it work.
Early struggles that nearly broke the venture
According to Pankaj, the early years were full of difficulties. Running a shop on such a small loan amount was not easy, and the family faced several tough phases. Despite that, they refused to give up. "We never lost courage and kept struggling continuously, and today we have found success," Pankaj said. That persistence gradually built the shop's local reputation and won customers' trust.
From three family members to 25 employees
When the shop first opened, only Pankaj, his father and his brother, three people in total, handled everything themselves. As the business grew, the family began hiring outside workers as well. Today, around 25 people work at the shop, including young men, young women and women. Pankaj says the goal has always been to create as much local employment as possible, and the family keeps introducing changes and new ideas in the business every year to bring in more people.
Items priced from ₹20 to ₹5,000, retail and wholesale both
Located in the Kamal Talkies area, the shop sells toys and games items priced between ₹20 and ₹5,000. Customers walk in directly to buy from the shop, while the family also runs a separate wholesale operation that provides employment to still more people. Pankaj says all items sold at the shop are of good quality, which is why customers keep coming back. Twenty five years after it began, the shop is no longer just a business, it has become the family's main source of livelihood and a significant source of local employment.
