Everything changed when Smriti decided to enter a beauty pageant, a decision that required Rs 1 lakh she simply did not have. Her father agreed to lend her the money, but attached a strict condition, if she failed to repay the loan within a set time, she would have to marry someone against her own wishes. Tulsi Virani becomes her big break
That relentless hustle eventually paid off. Producer Ekta Kapoor cast her as Tulsi Virani in the blockbuster serial Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, a role that turned her into a household name almost overnight and made her one of Indian television's most beloved bahus. The serial was watched in almost every Indian household, and Tulsi Virani came to be seen as the model of an ideal bahu for millions of viewers.
From the screen to the cabinet
After ruling television screens for years, Smriti Irani turned to politics.
