Avani Chaturvedi, who grew up in a small town in Madhya Pradesh, broke through that wall and wrote a new chapter by becoming the first Indian woman to fly a fighter jet solo.
Avani Chaturvedi was born in Rewa district in Madhya Pradesh, and she spent her childhood in a small town called Deoland. Her father worked as a superintending engineer in the state's water resources department, while her mother was a homemaker. A spirit of serving the nation ran through her household from early on, since her elder brother served in the Indian Army. Watching her brother in uniform stirred in Avani a desire to do something for the country too, though she chose the path of the sky rather than the ground. Her dream was to become a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force, but at the time she was growing up, women were simply not allowed to join the fighter pilot stream.
Engineering Days Opened a New Direction
Avani completed her BTech from Banasthali University in Rajasthan, and it was here that her life took a turn. After joining the university's flying club, her interest in flying aircraft kept growing. What began as mere curiosity gradually became her biggest goal. She then prepared for the Air Force Common Admission Test, known as AFCAT, and cleared it successfully. But even then, the fighter stream remained closed to women, meaning that despite clearing the selection, she still could not fly combat aircraft.
The 2015 Decision That Changed Everything
The year 2015 brought a major turning point in the history of the Indian Air Force. In October 2015, the Government of India decided to open the Indian Air Force's fighter stream to women on an experimental basis. With that decision, women got the opportunity to fly fighter aircraft for the first time. Avani Chaturvedi was selected for this historic batch along with Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh. The three of them became India's first women fighter pilot officers, and in June 2016, they were formally commissioned in the Indian Air Force as the country's first women fighter pilots.
The Solo MiG-21 Flight That Made History
Becoming a fighter pilot was a big achievement in itself, but the real test was still ahead. Every fighter pilot starts out flying with an instructor, but a moment eventually comes when the pilot has to fly the aircraft completely alone. At that moment, there is no trainer in the cockpit, and the pilot has to handle every situation single handedly. For Avani, that historic day was February 19, 2018. She flew the MiG-21 Bison, counted among the Indian Air Force's most demanding and fastest fighter jets, solo from Jamnagar Air Force Station. She flew the supersonic fighter jet successfully for about 30 minutes and landed it safely. With that flight, Avani Chaturvedi became the first Indian woman to fly a fighter jet solo. It was not just a personal achievement, it marked an entirely new chapter in the history of Indian aviation and the Indian Air Force.

What makes Avani Chaturvedi stand out is not just her record but also her outlook. When asked how it felt to achieve this as a woman, she gave a remarkably simple yet profound answer. She said that the aircraft does not care whether the person flying it is a man or a woman, it only knows who can fly it correctly. That very outlook continues to define her entire career today.
Representing India on the International Stage
Avani built her name not just in India but on the international stage as well. In 2023, she became the first woman fighter pilot of the Indian Air Force to represent India in an international aerial wargame held in Japan. That achievement turned out to be yet another historic milestone in her career.

Given her contribution and achievements for the country, Avani Chaturvedi received several honours. In 2020, the President of India honoured her with the Nari Shakti Puraskar, considered the country's highest civilian award for women.
