True success comes to those who learn from challenges rather than giving up in the face of initial hurdles. Saurabh, a 31-year-old resident of Naugachia in Bhagalpur, has exemplified this truth through his remarkable journey. After completing his BTech degree, he joined a private firm where he earned a monthly salary of 35,000 to 40,000 rupees. Despite the steady income, his heart was set on carving a different path. After working for about four years, he handed in his resignation and returned home, eventually transforming fish farming into a thriving venture with an annual turnover of nearly 30 lakh rupees.
Family opposition and the bold decision to quit
The choice to walk away from a stable corporate job did not sit well with his family members. When he came back home, his relatives expressed deep displeasure, questioning the wisdom of leaving a secure job behind. However, Saurabh envisioned a bright future in aquaculture. Choosing to ignore external skepticism, he remained steadfast in his goals. He reached out directly to the fisheries department to understand the nitty-gritty of the trade and began learning the essential techniques required for the business.
Starting out with a two-acre pond
Equipped with proper training and detailed knowledge of various government schemes, Saurabh initiated his commercial journey using a pond spanning about two acres. The initial phase brought multiple challenges, including learning how to manage fish health, maintain the water body properly, and protect the stock from diseases. Despite facing early disappointments, he maintained his perseverance. As time passed, his practical experience grew, giving him a solid grasp of the trade that soon began reflecting positively on his bottom line.
Reducing dependence on Bengal by launching a hatchery
Expanding beyond basic fish rearing, Saurabh ventured into operating a hatchery to produce fish seeds, locally known as jeera, which form the foundation of aquaculture. Previously, fish farmers in the region had to depend heavily on supplies brought in from Bengal. By producing these seeds locally within Bihar, he filled a crucial gap in the market. The superior quality of his fish seeds drove up demand, opening new avenues for growth and prompting him to expand his operations across a much larger area.
Today, his aquaculture and hatchery setup spans roughly five acres of land, generating an impressive annual turnover of approximately 30 lakh rupees. Starting from a regular corporate job, Saurabh has established a shining example of self-employment in rural areas through sheer hard work and practical know-how. His inspiring journey serves as a beacon for young people who aspire to build careers in agriculture and allied sectors, proving that proper training, technical awareness, and patience can turn any venture into a structured and profitable enterprise.
