Household electricity expenses typically hover around a predictable average each month, but receiving an unusually inflated bill can instantly strain anyone's finances. In such situations, people often find themselves confused about where to report billing errors, how to get their meters inspected, and what legal remedies are available if the electricity department fails to take action. To address these common grievances, Faridabad Sector 12 court advocate Mohan Tiwari has shared detailed insights on where consumers can file complaints regarding incorrect bills and how they can exercise their rights effectively.
Where to File the Initial Complaint
Mohan Tiwari explains that when facing an abnormally high bill, it is crucial to first determine where the discrepancy lies. If consumers feel the charges exceed their actual power consumption, they should visit their local electricity department office. A dedicated help desk is usually available there to register complaints using the electricity bill number. If the issue remains unresolved at the help desk, consumers can directly meet the concerned SDO and submit a written grievance.
Procedure to Correct an Erroneous Bill
To get a faulty bill corrected, Mohan Tiwari notes that an application must be submitted in the name of the local electricity department SDO. This application requires a detailed explanation of the problem along with a formal request for meter inspection. Department staff will subsequently inspect the meter to determine whether there is a physical malfunction or if it is operating properly.
Essential Documents Required During Filing
Mohan Tiwari emphasizes that consumers must keep several key documents ready while filing a complaint, including the current electricity bill, previous payment receipts, and a photograph of the current meter reading. Maintaining a record of power bills from past months is also advised. All these supporting documents should be attached to the application and submitted to the SDO to facilitate a proper departmental investigation.
Legal Recourse If the Department Fails to Act
If the problem persists despite lodging a complaint with the electricity department and approaching the SDO, Mohan Tiwari points out that consumers possess the legal right to approach the consumer forum. Individuals can pursue this legal avenue by presenting their complaint along with all related documentary evidence to seek a resolution.
Must You Pay Even If the Bill Is Wrong?
Regarding disputed bills, Mohan Tiwari advises informing the relevant authorities immediately and attempting to get the meter checked. However, if the department insists on clearing the payment despite ongoing disputes, consumers may occasionally need to pay the amount first and seek a refund or adjustment later through proper legal channels. If an investigation proves the bill was indeed excessive, the extra amount paid is typically adjusted against subsequent electricity bills.
Expected Timeline for Bill Correction
There is no fixed statutory deadline for resolving electricity bill discrepancies, according to Mohan Tiwari. The process generally takes anywhere from one to one and a half months, depending heavily on the staff strength and workload of the local electricity office. Nonetheless, consumers are strongly advised to preserve all proof of their complaints and submit a formal written application to the designated SDO.
