At a time when securing traditional employment presents significant hurdles for young individuals, a youth from the Mau district of Uttar Pradesh has established a highly rewarding model in modern agriculture. Aamir Ahmad, a resident of Bhatkol in Mau, decided to embrace farming as a full-time profession after completing his intermediate education rather than waiting for job opportunities. Over the past 5 years, he has focused on planned vegetable cultivation using structural innovations. By deploying a multi-crop system with an initial outlay of just Rs 15,000 on eight biswa of land, he continues to harvest substantial yields that generate lakhs of rupees in profits.
Tri-Crop Cultivation on a Single Structural Outlay
The core of Aamir Ahmad's farming strategy lies in efficient cost optimization. While standard vegetable farming often requires separate soil preparation and support structures for each crop cycle, he devised a method to grow three consecutive crops on a single investment. His crop rotation comprises snake gourd (chichinda), cowpea (boro), and bottle gourd (lauki). Managing this farming setup requires the continuous effort of 3 to 4 workers. Once the initial ridges and climbing supports are erected, subsequent crops require expenditure only for seeds, drastically lowering the overall operational expenses for the remaining cycles.
From May-June Sowing to Rapid Cost Recovery
The current agricultural cycle began around May and June when Aamir Ahmad prepared systematically raised beds on his plot and planted snake gourd seeds along the ridges. As the seedlings emerged and matured, he implemented the mulching method, allowing the vines to spread and climb along the supported plastic mulch setup. This technique enhanced growth and protected the crop. He has been harvesting snake gourd continuously for about a month. The total expense to cultivate this eight biswa plot stood at Rs 15,000, an amount he recovered within just 10 days of starting harvests.
Sequential Planting for Sustained Long-Term Profits
As the snake gourd production completes its cycle, Aamir Ahmad will transition directly to the next crop without dismantling the existing infrastructure. He plans to sow cowpea seeds along the same ridge lines and mulch structure. Once the cowpea harvest concludes, he will plant bottle gourd seeds as the third crop on the very same support frame. By taking three harvests from a single structural investment of 15,000 rupees, Aamir Ahmad maintains a continuous supply of seasonal vegetables, securing net earnings in the lakhs every season.
