Srikanth Bolla: From Being Told to Beg to Leading a ₹500 Crore Business

Born blind in Andhra Pradesh, Srikanth Bolla overcame societal rejection and physical barriers to study at MIT and build the successful enterprise Bollant Industries.

Early Life and Overcoming Adversity

Born into a humble family in Andhra Pradesh, Srikanth Bolla was blind from birth. Society frequently labeled him a burden, and his parents often encountered people who suggested that he should spend his life begging on the streets. Despite these discouragements, his family remained his steadfast support. Even as a young child, Srikanth Bolla displayed sharp intelligence and a strong desire to learn, though the educational system was not equipped to support his needs, and he was frequently denied opportunities simply because he was blind.

The Fight for Education and MIT

When Srikanth Bolla achieved brilliant results in his Class 10 and 12 exams, he faced a new roadblock: being denied permission to study science. The prevailing sentiment was that a blind student was unfit for science studies. He chose to challenge this notion by taking the matter to court and successfully winning the right to study the subject he was passionate about. Later, he set his sights on international education and earned a seat at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, becoming one of the first international blind students to be admitted.

Founding Bollant Industries

During his time at MIT, Srikanth Bolla realized that people with disabilities were rarely granted dignified employment opportunities. He resolved to create a venture that would prioritize those who were overlooked by society. In 2012, he founded Bollant Industries back in India. Securing investment was difficult, and he faced skepticism from critics who mocked the idea of a blind person running a company. He persisted through their doubt and negative comments.

Scaling Up Success

Bollant Industries creates sustainable, eco-friendly goods by recycling materials and using agricultural waste. The company has grown significantly, employing more than 500 people, most of whom are differently-abled or underprivileged. Today, the business is valued at approximately ₹500 crore. Beyond his business success, Srikanth Bolla has been recognized on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list and has served as an investor on the television show Shark Tank India, where he now supports other entrepreneurs.
