A young farmer in Bihar's Madhubani district is showing how banana cultivation can turn into a long-term profit machine for those willing to move beyond traditional crops. Vipin, a progressive young farmer from Madhubani, has adopted modern, scientific banana farming techniques and is now earning lakhs of rupees every year, setting an example for other farmers in the region who are increasingly turning to new technology and fresh ideas in agriculture.
Investment of just over a lakh, returns up to five lakh
According to Vipin, banana cultivation costs only 1 to 1.25 lakh rupees per acre. In return, a single acre brings in a handsome income of 4 to 5 lakh rupees. That works out to a clean, direct profit of roughly 3.5 to 4 lakh rupees per acre. This low investment paired with such a high return is what makes banana farming far more profitable than many traditional crops.
The Israeli G-9 variety behind the profits
Vipin grows the special G-9 banana variety, developed using Israeli technique, across his fields. The biggest strength of this variety is that it is built entirely for commercial farming. Its bananas are noticeably longer and more visually appealing than regular varieties, which helps them find buyers quickly in the market. Demand for this variety stays consistently high because it does not spoil quickly. Even after the bunch is cut from the plant, it can be kept safe for several more days without rotting or decaying. As a result, losses during long-distance transport are almost negligible, a huge relief for farmers who often lose produce in transit.
A simple organic formula that keeps plants disease-free
Vipin also shared a remarkably simple yet effective organic method to keep his banana plants healthy. He explained that when a plant is being planted for the first time, a pit is dug and 15 to 20 kilograms of well-rotted cow dung is placed at the root of each plant. Soil is then added on top before the banana sapling is planted. Following this organic method means the plant never falls sick and stays disease-free throughout its life. The direct benefit is that farmers do not need to rely on expensive chemical fertilisers or heavy pesticide spraying later on, which keeps overall costs down even further.
1,200 plants per acre, ten years of continuous income
Earning steady profit from banana farming for a full 10 years requires a few important technical precautions. First, there must be a gap of at least 6 feet between one plant and the next so that every plant gets enough air and sunlight. The area around the banana orchard should also be kept completely free of grass and weeds, since a cleaner field means a lower risk of pest infestation. Based on this spacing, around 1,200 plants can comfortably be planted in a single acre.
The biggest advantage of banana farming is that once an orchard is set up scientifically the first time, there is no need to plant new saplings again for the next 10 years. Fresh shoots keep emerging from the roots of the old plants, giving rise to new crops on their own. That means the effort and investment put in just once keeps delivering bumper income for the farmer for an entire decade.
