While much of the excitement surrounding iOS 27 is directed toward Siri AI, Apple has quietly introduced a suite of upgrades to the Messages app. These improvements focus on enhancing the daily messaging experience through smarter AI integration, refined notifications, and better overall performance across devices. Although the full release is scheduled for later this fall, these features are currently accessible via the iOS 27 beta. Keep in mind that beta software comes with inherent risks before you decide to install it.
Customizing the voice message button
For those who rarely use voice notes, the persistent voice message button in the chat box can be an accidental nuisance. With iOS 27, Apple allows for greater customization. By navigating to Settings > Apps > Messages and selecting Show in Text Field, users can now choose between three distinct settings: Record Audio, Start Dictation, or None. Disabling the voice button completely can help avoid accidental triggers, or you can swap it for dictation to suit your workflow better.
Playback speed for voice notes
Consuming long voice notes becomes much more efficient in iOS 27. Previously, users were locked into listening at standard 1x speed. The new update introduces a playback speed menu where you can toggle between 1.25x, 1.5x, or 2x speeds. Simply tapping the 1x button next to any incoming voice note reveals these options, allowing you to breeze through longer audio messages quickly.
Siri AI for message composition
The updated Siri AI is deeply integrated into the Messages app. When you tap the chat box, a "Write with Siri" button appears above the keyboard. This allows users to request AI-generated drafts, edit existing text, or adjust the tone of their messages. Siri AI can also assist in retrieving specific information, such as images, links, or older messages within the app. This feature is restricted to devices that fully support Apple Intelligence.
Introducing the Drawing app
Apple continues to support iMessage apps with the addition of a new Drawing tool. This feature enables users to sketch something quickly and send it directly to their contacts. The recipient can view these drawings regardless of whether they are also using iOS 27. To access this tool, simply press the + button located next to the chat box to view all available iMessage applications.
One-tap suggestions
For devices running Apple Intelligence, iOS 27 adds helpful one-tap suggestions within chat threads. These suggestions are context-aware. For instance, if a contact asks for photos, Siri AI can surface relevant images from your library. Alternatively, if a friend requests that you bring an item to a meeting, the app will offer buttons to save that information directly into Notes or Reminders.
Automatic resending of failed messages
Previously, a failed message would simply hang in the chat with an ominous red exclamation mark. In iOS 27, the system is designed to automatically attempt to resend failed messages. Combined with general reliability updates, users should experience faster message loading and improved synchronization across multiple Apple devices.
Individual send indicators
Large attachments like high-resolution videos or photos have historically caused confusion in chat threads, often appearing to block subsequent text messages. Apple is resolving this by providing a dedicated send indicator for every individual message. This visual cue allows you to confirm that while a large file is still uploading, your follow-up text has already been successfully transmitted.
Enhanced search functionality
The Messages search feature has been expanded to support more specific queries. You can now use the search field to look up conversations by phone number, which will display all related threads. Additionally, if you have assigned a nickname to a contact, searching for that name will reveal all conversations associated with that person.
Consolidated notification handling
Group chats can often lead to an overwhelming influx of alerts, particularly when multiple people react to a single message. iOS 27 addresses this by consolidating these reactions into a single notification, significantly reducing clutter in your lock screen and notification center.
Inline replies for RCS
As Apple continues to expand its support for RCS messaging, iOS 27 introduces inline replies for these conversations. This means that when you are texting with Android users via RCS, you can reply directly to specific messages within the thread. This makes multi-platform group chats much easier to follow and manage.
