A shocking instance of administrative neglect has come to light from Rajasthan's Dungarpur district, where a portion of a dilapidated room roof collapsed at a government upper primary school on Monday. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported because the vulnerable room had been kept locked for approximately a year as a safety precaution.
Sudden Panic Among Students and Teachers
According to officials sharing details of the incident, students were busy studying in other rooms of the school when the collapse occurred. The loud crash of falling debris triggered immediate panic among the pupils and staff, prompting everyone to rush out of their classrooms into the open.
Two Out of Ten Rooms Marked Unsafe
Officials noted that two rooms within the school premises had already been declared unsafe well in advance. As a precautionary measure, regular classes inside those spaces were strictly prohibited. Out of a total of 10 rooms in the school, two are in a dilapidated condition. The roof portion that caved in belonged to one of these rooms, while the adjacent room remains in an equally precarious state.
A Major Catastrophe Avoided
Authorities emphasized that keeping the hazardous rooms locked averted a major tragedy. Debris, including heavy cement chunks, bricks, and exposed iron reinforcement rods, lay scattered across the floor after the collapse.
Outrage Among Local Residents
The incident has sparked severe anger among local residents and parents, who questioned why the administration remains indifferent toward the plight of government schools. Critics pointed out that ignoring structural decay without undertaking timely repairs exposes a negligent attitude. Congress leader Vinod Jakhar wrote on X to criticize the government over the unsafe state of educational infrastructure.
Government Roadmap to Transform Schools
In response to infrastructural concerns, the state administration has formulated a comprehensive plan to upgrade government schools across Rajasthan. The state government led by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has readied a three-year roadmap aimed at completely transforming government school facilities. An estimated budget of around 12,500 crore rupees will be allocated for this initiative spanning the years 2026-27 to 2028-29.
Massive Construction and Repair Drive
Under the newly announced government blueprint, 3,587 new school buildings will be constructed across the state. Additionally, the plan provides for 83,783 new classrooms, large-scale repair and safety enhancement work across 22,589 schools, and the construction of 13,616 new toilet complexes.
