China has once again captured global attention by completing and launching a massive engineering feat beneath one of its most prominent rivers. While underground construction projects of this scale are often fraught with immense obstacles, modern technological advancements have made seemingly impossible infrastructure a reality. Located in the city of Jinan within China's eastern Shandong province, this infrastructure marvel represents the world's largest-diameter underwater shield tunnel. Official updates confirmed that the project has finished construction and is now formally open for public use. According to detailed specifications, the newly launched underwater shield tunnel spans approximately 5,755 meters in total length. It features a single-bore, double-deck design philosophy, meaning that two distinct levels are housed within a single circular structure. Vehicles will be able to travel on both the upper and lower decks simultaneously. The designated design speed for the passage is set at 60 kilometers per hour, establishing a reliable transit corridor for daily commuters and freight alike.
The primary shield section of the tunnel extends over roughly 3,290 meters. Excavating this massive underground corridor required the deployment of an enormous Tunnel Boring Machine with a cutting diameter of 17.5 meters. This specialized heavy machinery played a crucial role in carving through the difficult strata beneath the riverbed safely and efficiently.
This marks China's first single-bore, double-deck shield tunnel to cut directly underneath the Yellow River. The construction alignment traversed highly sensitive zones, including river embankments and the active riverbed itself. Project teams faced a multitude of complex technical hurdles throughout the construction phase, successfully overcoming 28 major engineering challenges. These difficulties included maintaining strict excavation face stability, controlling potential ground settlement beneath the river embankments, preventing large-section tunnel segments from floating upward, and executing eco-friendly, efficient disposal of massive quantities of generated slurry.
During the excavation process, the engineering team broke several performance records. They achieved a maximum daily tunneling footage of 18 meters and advanced 426 meters within a single month, setting a world record for 17-meter class shield tunneling operations.
