Meta is preparing a major usability enhancement for WhatsApp that could make joining calls seamless for non-registered users. The messaging platform is developing a new capability that will allow individuals without a WhatsApp account or the application installed on their devices to participate in audio and video calls. Under the platform's current framework, participating in any WhatsApp call strictly requires an active user account and the application. Meta is now working to remove this entry barrier to simplify group communication.
How the Guest Calls Feature Operates
The feature being developed is titled Guest Calls. Through this system, existing WhatsApp users will be able to create dedicated call links and share them with non-users. Anyone receiving the link will be eligible to join the ongoing call without undergoing account creation or downloading the WhatsApp application onto their smartphone or computer.
The process of initiating a guest-accessible call starts within the Calls tab of the WhatsApp interface. From this section, the host can directly generate a shareable call link. Before generating the link, the user selects the intended call type, specifying whether it will be an audio session or a video meeting. Once created, the link can be distributed via email, text message, or any preferred communication channel to family members, friends, or work colleagues.
Web Browser Integration and Guest Access
When a recipient who lacks a WhatsApp account or application opens the link, it will launch directly within their device's standard web browser. The call session will then execute through WhatsApp Web infrastructure, bypassing the need for app installation or profile registration. This eliminates friction for temporary participants who only need to join a single session.
This functionality is particularly advantageous for mixed groups where some participants actively use WhatsApp while others do not. It streamlines family catch-ups, spontaneous team discussions, and professional online meetings by offering a single entry point accessible from any web browser.
Host Controls and End-to-End Security
To prevent unauthorized access and maintain conversation privacy, the Guest Calls architecture grants substantial control to the call host. When a guest attempts to join using a generated link, the host receives a prompt and can choose to either accept or deny the entry request.
During an active call, the host retains full administrative privileges, including the ability to add new attendees or remove existing participants as needed. The host also has the authority to terminate the entire call session for all participants simultaneously. Furthermore, WhatsApp aims to preserve its standard End-to-End Encryption for Guest Calls, ensuring that security protocols remain uncompromised across web-based guest connections.
Development Timeline and Market Context
Technologically, this capability appears to build upon WhatsApp's existing Guest Chat framework. The feature remains in active development, and Meta has not yet released a prototype version to Beta Testers. Consequently, no official release date or public deployment schedule has been confirmed by the company.
If fully deployed to global users in the future, Guest Calls could alter how quick virtual meetings are conducted. By enabling instant access without requiring app downloads or profile setups, WhatsApp could position itself as a more convenient alternative to specialized video conferencing services such as Zoom and Google Meet.
