Microsoft has quietly handed millions of Windows 10 users an extra year of security coverage, extending its Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program deadline well beyond its original end date. The program was previously set to close in October 2026, but will now run through October 12, 2027.
Already Enrolled? No Action Needed
For users who are already part of the ESU program, the extension is entirely seamless. Microsoft confirmed on its support page that existing enrollments will automatically carry forward to the new end date of October 12, 2027. There is no need for re-registration or any further steps on the user's part.
New Enrollments Still Welcome
Users who have not yet signed up for the ESU program can still join at any point before the final deadline. Microsoft does accompany this with a firm caution: until a user completes enrollment, their system remains at heightened risk from viruses, malware, and other cybersecurity threats. Enrolling sooner is therefore the safer path.
A Genuine Lifeline for Older Machines
The extension carries the most weight for users whose computers do not meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11. These users previously faced pressure to act quickly, but now have roughly one additional year to either budget for a new PC or plan a transition to Windows 11. Throughout that entire period, their existing system continues to receive the security patches it needs, so protection does not lapse in the meantime.
How to Join the ESU Program
To enroll, users need to sign in with their Microsoft account. The program is available on Windows 10 version 22H2 across the Home, Professional, Pro Education, and Workstation editions. The device must also have the latest Windows 10 update installed before enrollment can proceed. A single ESU license can provide coverage for up to 10 devices.
