Rockstar Sets an $80 Record and a November 19 Date as Grand Theft Auto VI Opens for Preorders

Grand Theft Auto VI opens for preorders today with a record $80 standard edition and a $100 ultimate edition, ahead of a November 19 release widely expected to become the biggest entertainment launch ever.

After years of teasers, leaks and speculation, Grand Theft Auto VI is finally something gamers can put real money down on. Preorders open today, and Rockstar has locked in a release date of November 19, setting up what is widely expected to become the biggest entertainment launch the world has ever seen.

Grand Theft Auto VI is positioned to become the single highest-grossing entertainment property of all time. It would be a staggering achievement, yet the series has form here. GTA V sold $1 billion worth of copies within just three days of launch and has since shipped 230 million copies. Factor in the microtransactions players have poured into Grand Theft Auto Online, and the title has earned publisher Rockstar and parent company Take-Two Interactive close to $10 billion in the 13 years since it arrived.

A record-breaking price tag

The sequel could dwarf those numbers. The standard edition carries an $80 price, the highest base price ever set for a console video game. Above that sits a $100 ultimate edition. The increase follows Rockstar pouring more than $1 billion into developing GTA VI, a clear sign the studio is banking on returns at least on par with GTA V, and very possibly far beyond it.

The appetite looks more than ready to meet those expectations. Fan communities on Reddit and Discord have worked themselves into a frenzy, dissecting every tiny detail they can pull from Rockstar's rare official posts. The most recent official trailer landed more than a year ago, and fans have not stopped picking it apart since.

A make-or-break moment for gaming

The launch is being treated as a turning point for the entire games business. The industry has splintered: AI looms as a threat, the market is consolidating around the largest publishers, and smaller studios are battered by layoffs and titles that miss their mark. GTA VI is shaping up to be a bellwether for the whole sector, especially on consoles.

"This is the big one," says Joost van Dreunen, a games industry adviser and professor of video games at the NYU Stern School of Business. "The whole industry has been clutching its little hands waiting for this one to come out, for a variety of reasons. It would prove that the game industry is still healthy at its core. That's how people will read that."

Fans are not entirely happy

Even with the game still five months away, plenty of grievances have surfaced. For starters, there is no disc; preorders are digital only. That has annoyed fans who dislike digital copies replacing physical ones, since they chip away at the feeling, and the fact, of ownership. The $100 ultimate edition has drawn even louder anger, because it locks away actual gameplay features from standard-edition owners, such as access to in-game custom shops where you can give characters particular tattoos or hairstyles.

The frustration has been building since Rockstar made the title official. GTA VI has already slipped twice, pushing rival publishers to shift their own releases out of the way to avoid being crushed by demand for a new GTA game. Rockstar has also weathered controversy, including firing workers who tried to unionize. And there was the huge Lapsus$ hack of 2022, which leaked early GTA VI footage along with the source code for GTA V. All of it leaves the game in a slightly awkward position.

Can the satire still bite?

"GTA has built its success on being this countercultural narrative mock and parody of American civilization and consumer culture," van Dreunen says. "In 2026, is it still possible to mock and provide satire on American civilization? It seems like real life has long caught up with art."

The series is known for sharp, crude satire of capitalism, with stories that hand players a rags-to-riches arc that usually closes on a brutal critique of how wealth and power can go horribly wrong. That is a trickier target to land for a company teeing up billions of dollars in presales.

"Certain artists do well during their early stages, then they become sort of the institutionalized musicians or filmmakers or game makers," van Dreunen says. "Is it still relevant? Does it resonate, or is it going to be too glossy?"

Too big to fail

Whatever the doubts, GTA VI looks almost impossible to derail. Even 13 years on, people are still playing GTA V and GTA Online, whether in ordinary multiplayer or in elaborate roleplaying servers. Clips of players messing about in the game's lively, reactive world routinely rank among the most-watched streams on platforms like Twitch. Strip away the content-capture angle and the promise of GTA VI is still a living, breathing world you can simply spend time inside.

"This is one cohesive universe, and you can kind of all hang out together," van Dreunen says. "There's an ambition, a promise underneath all this. If they pull it off, you have this rich overlay of all this stuff to do that you can share with other people. It has enormous potential."

Rockstar has been laying the groundwork. In 2023 it bought Cfx, a marketplace for modders behind hugely popular roleplaying servers, and converted it into an official marketplace for user-created assets to be used in-game. The studio has signaled that GTA VI will ship with stronger content-capture tools, making it easier for players to produce their own videos.

"GTA VI is the release of a new operating system for an entire community," van Dreunen says. "I think that that's a big difference here."

What this means for you

  • For gamers: Preorders open today and the game arrives November 19, but the standard edition now costs $80, the highest base price ever for a console game, with a $100 ultimate edition above it.
  • Heads up: Preorders are digital only with no disc, and the $100 ultimate edition locks some features, like in-game custom shops for tattoos and hairstyles, away from standard buyers.
  • For investors: Huge expected sales could drive major revenue to publisher Rockstar and parent Take-Two Interactive, following GTA V's nearly $10 billion haul.
