Professional tennis player Gael Monfils has strongly defended his former wife Elina Svitolina after she faced what he described as venomous criticism following the announcement of their split. The couple, who tied the knot in 2021, share a four-year-old daughter named Skai. Monfils expressed deep frustration over the unkind public reactions directed toward her since they made their separation public.
Addressing the Harsh Backlash
Monfils stated that Elina Svitolina handled the situation in the best way she knew, noting that many people felt her explanation was not perfect enough. He pointed out that the backlash she endured crossed the line into being unkind at best and venomous at worst. Although they are no longer together as a couple, Monfils emphasized that they remain a family and that his heart hurts over the situation while remaining forever grateful for her past support and love.
Respecting Privacy and Individual Battles
While acknowledging that the public feels invested in his personal happiness, Monfils admitted he found the lack of grace and kindness toward Elina Svitolina quite upsetting. He urged observers to remember that much happens behind closed doors in any relationship that cannot be fully captured in a public statement. Noting that they both face their own personal battles, he reaffirmed his respect for her choices and emphasized their shared commitment to caring for their child.
Retirement and Transition to Finance
In addition to addressing the personal fallout, Monfils is transitioning away from professional tennis. His retirement was effectively confirmed when he appeared on the International Tennis Integrity Authority list of retired players, having removed himself from anti-doping protocols. Although he will not return to official professional competition, he is still expected to join Stan Wawrinka, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray at an exhibition event in Geneva in December. Furthermore, having won 13 ATP Tour titles, Monfils is preparing to embark on a new career in finance by joining a Swiss wealth management firm.
