Delhi Woman Constable Swindled of 24 Lakhs After Social Media Friendship, Accused Arrested

A 26-year-old man has been arrested for defrauding a Delhi Police woman constable of 24 lakh rupees under the guise of investment. The accused had befriended her on Instagram by posing as a prominent cricket figure.

A disturbing cyber fraud case has come to light in the national capital, where a woman police official was trapped into a massive financial scam following a social media interaction. The elaborate conspiracy forced the victim to exhaust her life savings and plunge into heavy debt. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, law enforcement agencies took swift action and apprehended a suspect, and further interrogation is currently underway. This incident underscores the hidden dangers of digital interactions, as perpetrators continuously devise sophisticated methods to build false trust and manipulate unsuspecting targets.

The Interaction Began on Instagram and Shifted to WhatsApp

The sequence of events leading to the fraud originated on the social media platform Instagram. The perpetrator initially made contact by pretending to seek guidance regarding recruitment into the police force under the sports quota. This initial pretext of asking for career assistance served as a stepping stone. As communication progressed, the interaction shifted from Instagram to WhatsApp. To solidify his deception and gain absolute trust, the accused falsely represented himself as a prominent and well-known personality from the cricket fraternity, which made it easier for the victim to believe his fabricated persona.

Lured Into Investment Traps With Promises of High Returns

Once rapport was established, the accused dangled the prospect of lucrative investment returns, convincing the woman constable to hand over large sums of money without a second thought. Falling prey to this manipulation, she initially transferred her personal savings. When those funds depleted, she was compelled to secure a personal bank loan amounting to twelve lakh rupees. Furthermore, to accumulate even more cash, she borrowed money from acquaintances and people in her social circle. By combining her savings, bank borrowings, and borrowed funds, she transferred a total of twenty-four lakh rupees before realizing she had been duped.

Large Sums Routed Through Accounts Linked to Betting Platforms

During the course of the investigation, authorities uncovered crucial details regarding the money trail. It was revealed that, at the behest of the accused, nearly eight lakh rupees were funneled into bank accounts directly associated with an online betting platform. The emergence of these specific transactions expanded the scope of the inquiry. Investigators are currently examining where the fraudulently obtained money was ultimately disbursed and whether any additional accomplices or external bank accounts played a role in the syndicate.

Allegations of Misbehavior and Physical Assault During Meetings

This criminal matter is not restricted solely to financial fraud, as serious allegations of harassment have also been brought to light. According to the formal complaint lodged with law enforcement, the accused and the victim also met in person. It is alleged that during this meeting, the suspect behaved inappropriately by touching the woman improperly and attempting to assault her physically. Acting on these comprehensive charges, the cyber cell of the central district police arrested twenty-six-year-old Vikrant Kumar, also known as Vicky Tomar, and initiated due legal proceedings.

Hard to believe someone conned a police officer by pretending to be a cricket celebrity on social media. Trusting anyone online these days is just playing with fire.

When even police personnel fall for such traps, what hope is there for common folks? Trusting anyone on social media is dangerous.

Arjun, you're so right. A cousin of mine almost fell for a similar online scam when a stranger pretended to be a big official to trap her. Trusting people online is genuinely getting too risky.

Hard to believe a police personnel fell for such an obvious Instagram trap.

Karan, you have a point, but isn't there any cyber fraud awareness training given inside the police department itself?
