Political activity has intensified ahead of the upcoming Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), with a substantial number of filings. A total of 10,958 nomination papers were filed by 10,936 candidates across the region. However, State Election Commissioner Dr. Pradip Kumar Chakraborty noted that the commission was yet to receive the final consolidated figures as data compilation continues.
Party-wise Breakdown of Nominations
Data available from the electoral authorities indicates that the Tipra Motha Party has fielded the highest number of contenders for the local polls. The party submitted 4,390 nomination papers through 4,371 candidates. Following closely in terms of candidate numbers is the CPI(M), which filed 2,487 nomination papers through 2,484 candidates.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party submitted 1,974 nomination papers by 1,974 candidates, while the Congress party filed 466 nomination papers. Additionally, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) submitted 486 nomination papers. The CPI filed four nomination papers, and various other candidates accounted for 1,151 nomination papers in total.
Election Schedule and Procedures
Polling for the Village Committees is officially scheduled to be held on September 28, and the counting of votes will take place on October 5. Before voting begins, administrative procedures must be completed. The scrutiny of nomination papers is slated for September 9, and candidates will have until September 11 to withdraw their nominations if they choose to do so.
Once the withdrawal window closes, the Commission will publish the final list of valid and contesting candidates. Following this publication, the authorities will commence the printing of ballot papers for the constituencies.
Seat Distribution and Security Arrangements
The elections will cover 4,597 Village Committee seats distributed across 2,634 constituencies. Out of the total seats, a significant majority—4,025 seats—are reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST). Furthermore, 178 seats are designated for Scheduled Castes (SC), leaving 394 seats as unreserved.
In terms of security, the State Election Commission has requested enhanced arrangements for the electoral exercise. Initial confirmation had been received for 24 companies of central forces. Additional forces were subsequently sanctioned, and more personnel were anticipated from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure smooth conduct.
