Torrential overnight rainfall has plunged several parts of Tripura capital Agartala into a flood-like crisis, with surging waters from the Haora River and nearby canals submerging homes, roads, and low-lying localities while disrupting normal routines on Sunday.
Worst-Hit Neighborhoods and Subdivisions
The inundation has severely impacted multiple localities, with Chandrapur, Pratapgarh, Baldakhal, Indranagar, and Aralia identified among the worst-hit zones. Several settlements situated under the Sadar and Jirania subdivisions of the West Tripura district have also faced heavy flooding, particularly communities residing in close proximity to the Haora River and the Katakhal Canal.
Rising River Levels and Local Concerns
The water level in the Haora River escalated sharply following heavy precipitation in surrounding catchment and hill areas, eventually breaching the danger mark. Residents living along the riverbanks noted that the water began swelling rapidly around 4 am on Sunday, severely affecting lower segments of Khayerpur and Baldakhal. Fearing further deterioration should the water levels continue to climb, families were seen scrambling to shift essential household belongings to elevated and safer locations.
Rescue Operations and Relief Camps
In response to the escalating crisis, the district administration has established six relief camps to shelter displaced residents. Boats have been deployed extensively for rescue and evacuation operations across waterlogged pockets, alongside mobilization of personnel from the Tripura State Rifles, local police, and various other governmental departments. The Agartala Municipal Corporation and allied agencies are actively distributing relief materials and essential provisions to those impacted.
Administrative Monitoring and Official Visits
Chief Minister Manik Saha stated that the unfolding situation is under round-the-clock surveillance. He directed concerned District Magistrates and Sub-Divisional Magistrates to enforce all mandatory protective measures. West Tripura District Magistrate Vishal Kumar, accompanied by administrative teams, personally visited the flood-hit zones to evaluate ground conditions and coordinate relief efforts.
Current Safety Status
Vulnerable communities remain on high alert as authorities continue monitoring weather and water trends closely. Officials confirmed that no casualties or loss of life have been reported so far, while comprehensive measures remain in active deployment across all affected sectors.
