A fatal mob violence incident occurred early Wednesday in the Khowai district of Tripura, where a 45-year-old resident was brutally assaulted to death under the suspicion of livestock theft. The deceased has been identified as Jalil Rahaman, a resident of Gilatali village located within the same district. Police authorities reported that the physical attack took place at Bagber while Rahaman was travelling back to his residence accompanied by two cows he had bought prior to the encounter.
Fatal Encounter at Early Dawn
The tragedy unfolded at approximately 4:45 am as Rahaman made his journey along the road with the two animals. According to initial findings by law enforcement officials, a group of local individuals intercepted Rahaman during the early morning hours and mistakenly identified him as a cattle thief. The gathering quickly turned violent, launching a severe physical assault on the victim. Officials noted that the unusual timing of his movement with the cattle at 4:45 am likely triggered suspicion among the residents in the area, leading directly to the aggressive confrontation.
Police Response and Health Centre Declaration
Upon being alerted about the ongoing violence at Bagber, a team from the local police station hurried to the site to assess the situation and control the violence. Officers managed to rescue Rahaman from the crowd and immediately arranged for his transportation to a nearby medical facility for urgent evaluation. However, medical professionals at the health centre examined Rahaman upon his arrival and formally declared him brought dead due to the severity of the injuries sustained during the assault.
Police Procedure and Background Verification
Speaking on the official procedure, Kalyanpur police station officer-in-charge Asish Sarkar explained the administrative steps being taken by the department. He mentioned that while law enforcement officers were initially prepared to file a suo motu case regarding the death, they held back after learning about the family's intentions. Rahaman's family notified the police that they intended to register a formal complaint themselves. Officer Asish Sarkar stated that the police department is waiting for this official complaint to proceed with formal legal measures against the perpetrators. Furthermore, official checks by law enforcement confirmed that Rahaman had no prior criminal record or antecedents registered at the local police station.
