A notorious criminal identified as Sanjay alias Sanjeev was killed in an intense police encounter on Indira Canal Road in Lucknow. The suspect carried a bounty of 1,00,000 rupees on his head. He was the key shooter involved in the high-profile murder of builder Sandeep Singh, which occurred on May 27, 2026, within the limits of the PGI police station area. Besides this case, the individual was linked to several sensational murders across the districts of Ambedkar Nagar, Basti, and Ayodhya. He also had established connections with organized crime networks led by Dilip Verma and Khan Mubarak in Ambedkar Nagar.
Details of the encounter
The encounter took place late at night when a police team, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar Singh, intercepted the suspect on Indira Canal Road. During the subsequent exchange of fire, Sanjay sustained gunshot injuries. He was rushed to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for emergency medical treatment, where doctors declared him dead. The Commissioner of Police, Lucknow, had previously placed a reward of 1,00,000 rupees for his arrest.
Recap of the murder of Sandeep Singh
On May 27, between 12:00 PM and 12:30 PM, 42-year-old Sandeep Singh arrived at his office in the PGI police station area accompanied by his driver, Pradeep Singh. As they exited their car and proceeded toward the office, two masked individuals on a motorcycle arrived at the scene. One of the attackers, wearing a white shirt and blue jeans, approached Sandeep and opened fire. The first bullet struck his chest, causing him to collapse on the road. Even after Sandeep fell, the attacker continued firing and shot him near the head.
The second accomplice waited nearby on a running Apache motorcycle. After the shooting, the primary gunman ran back, hopped onto the motorcycle, and the pair fled the area. The rider wore a helmet, while the shooter had covered his face with a white cloth. Bystanders transported Sandeep to the Apex Trauma Center, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Police later recovered 50 seconds of CCTV footage capturing the attack.

Sandeep Singh was originally from Takari village in the Jaunpur district. He resided with his family near Kalindi Park in the Vrindavan Yojana area of Lucknow. He is survived by his wife, an 11-year-old son, and a nine-year-old daughter. Sandeep had moved to Lucknow in 2008 to live with his uncle, Rajendra Prasad Singh, who served as a principal at a government inter college. He subsequently ventured into the real estate sector.
