Political maneuvering in Uttar Pradesh has intensified ahead of the crucial Rajya Sabha elections. Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party chief and cabinet minister Om Prakash Rajbhar met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow to convey internal party discord. Rajbhar informed the Chief Minister that two legislators from his six-member legislative group are no longer under his control and might engage in cross-voting during the impending ballot. This development presents a fresh tactical complication for the ruling alliance as election day draws nearer.
Loss of Control Over Two Legislators
During his briefing with the Chief Minister, Om Prakash Rajbhar candidly acknowledged that two of his MLAs are aligning closely with Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav. Rajbhar alleged that financial inducements are being offered to lure lawmakers away from the alliance. According to the party chief, three legislators were initially leaning toward the opposition camp. However, discussions successfully resolved grievances with one lawmaker, leaving two others persistently defiant and outside the party leadership's command structure.
Seat Arithmetic and the Ten-Seat Contest
Voting across ten Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh is scheduled for October 16. On the strength of existing assembly numbers, the Bharatiya Janata Party comfortably commands seven seats, while the Samajwadi Party holds the necessary strength to secure two seats outright. Tensions have mounted because Akhilesh Yadav has actively pursued numbers for an additional third seat. The Samajwadi Party leadership has indicated that a third candidate will be formally fielded as soon as the requisite legislative numbers are assembled, thereby raising the stakes around potential floor crossing.
Abbas Ansari Meeting Fuels Speculation
Adding weight to cross-voting concerns, SBSP legislator Abbas Ansari held a direct meeting with Akhilesh Yadav at the Janeshwar Mishra Trust in Lucknow. Abbas Ansari, the son of Mukhtar Ansari, represents the Mau Sadar constituency under the SBSP banner. Ansari's interaction with the Samajwadi Party chief fueled widespread speculation regarding his voting preferences. Observers identify Abbas Ansari and Jafrabad legislator Jagdish Narayan as the two lawmakers most likely to break ranks. Meanwhile, Rajbhar affirmed that discussions with Belthara Road MLA Hansu Ram concluded positively, ensuring his alignment with the party leadership.
SBSP Legislative Profile Since 2022
The Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party contested the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in partnership with the Samajwadi Party, securing six assembly seats before switching alliances to join the government under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The party's six elected representatives include Om Prakash Rajbhar from Zahoorabad in Ghazipur, Bedi Ram from Jakhanian in Ghazipur, Abbas Ansari from Mau Sadar in Mau, Doodhram from Mahadeva in Sant Kabir Nagar, Hansu Ram from Belthara Road in Ballia, and Jagdish Narayan from Jafrabad in Jaunpur. With voting set for October 16, the party faces a rigorous test in maintaining voting discipline across its ranks.
