The process for filling ten vacancies in the upper house of Parliament from Uttar Pradesh reached its final stage in Lucknow, with eight Bharatiya Janata Party nominees presenting their candidacy papers on Tuesday. The filings took place in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and senior organisational leadership, virtually confirming an uncontested outcome for every vacant seat across the state.
Balanced Social Representation Among Selected Nominees
The ruling party selected its slate with an evident focus on balancing caste equations ahead of upcoming political contests. From the Other Backward Classes, state cabinet minister Dharampal Singh, representing the Lodh community, was nominated alongside Prakash Pal and Kurmi representative Shruti Gangwar. Scheduled Caste representation was accorded to Vidyasagar Sonkar and Priyanka Rawat. From the upper castes, Radhakant Ojha and Gopi Krishna Pandey represent Brahmins, while Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan was fielded from the Kshatriya community. The inclusion of two women among the eight nominees highlights an effort to maintain demographic equilibrium.
Filing Formalities and Administrative Details
Outlining the official procedures, election officer Ajit Verma stated that every nominee submitted two sets of papers, with each set duly carrying the endorsement signatures of ten sitting legislators. Earlier in the schedule, senior Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav and Reliance Industries executive Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani had lodged their nomination papers. With the Tuesday deadline concluding the filing window and no surplus contenders entering the fray, all ten nominees stand poised for direct election without legislative polling.
Opposition Stand and Political Reactions
Initial speculation suggested that the Samajwadi Party might sponsor an additional candidate to force a contest. However, party president Akhilesh Yadav dispelled these rumours through an online statement, noting that their focus is directed toward the 403 assembly constituencies rather than fighting over three seats. Akhilesh Yadav was in Delhi taking part in an opposition demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Responding to this development, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak asserted that the main opposition party has effectively conceded defeat ahead of the 2027 state assembly polls. Meanwhile, nominee Prakash Pal commented following his submission that his party alone genuinely honours backward, Dalit, and minority representation. Prior to submitting their forms, the nominees gathered at the party state headquarters opposite the legislative assembly, meeting state in-charge Vinod Tawde before proceeding amid musical celebrations to the returning officer.
