In Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district, a brother allegedly shot his own sister dead while she was asleep at home. The incident took place in the Zakir Colony area under the jurisdiction of Meerut's Lohianagar police station, where 23 year old Afsha allegedly fired a bullet from a country made pistol into the head of his 21 year old sister Aksa on Saturday morning.
Family rushed her to hospital after hearing gunshot
The sound of the gunshot brought other family members running to the spot. Aksa was in critical condition and was rushed to a nearby private hospital for treatment. However, the injury to her head proved fatal and she died while undergoing treatment. News of her death sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood, and the Zakir Colony area was left in a state of panic.
Police swung into action after hospital alert
As soon as the private hospital informed police about the death caused by the gunshot, a team from Lohianagar police station launched an investigation. Police reached the spot and began questioning those present. Officers said preliminary questioning of family members present in the house was also carried out as part of the probe. Soon after, Afsha was taken into custody on the charge of murdering his sister, and after questioning he was formally arrested. The country made pistol used in the crime has also been recovered from the accused.
Accused cited suspicion over sister's 'character'
Kotwali Circle Officer Sangram Singh said that during interrogation, Afsha told police he shot his sister Aksa because he suspected her "character was not right". According to police, every angle of the case is being examined to establish the exact reason behind the killing. Aksa's body has been sent for a post mortem examination, and the investigation will proceed further once the report is received. The killing has left the family in mourning, and people in the surrounding area remain shaken by the incident.
Investigation still underway
According to police, every angle of the case is being probed to get to the bottom of what exactly happened at the house that morning and the state of mind the accused brother was in. Officers say the picture will become clearer once the post mortem report is received, and further legal action will be decided on that basis. Cases like this also underscore how violence against women within their own families, triggered merely by suspicion, can escalate to such a grave extent.
