A catastrophic fire engulfed a private sleeper tourist bus on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, claiming the lives of nine passengers and leaving several others severely burned. The vehicle was carrying more than 35 passengers on an overnight journey from Delhi to Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh when the disaster struck. Official statements recorded in the First Information Report (FIR) have brought to light alarming details regarding reckless behavior and blatant disregard for passenger safety by the bus crew shortly before the inferno took over.
Dispute Over Smoking and Dismissal of Passenger Objections
According to the FIR, passengers initially objected to the driver and conductor smoking cigarettes inside the bus during the journey. When commuters protested against smoking inside the moving vehicle, both crew members laughed dismissively at their concerns and threatened the passengers to remain silent. Instead of addressing the safety hazard, the crew chose to mock the passengers and continued smoking in the cabin area while the vehicle maintained high speed.
Burning Smell Brushed Aside as Routine Occurrence
Shortly afterward, a distinct burning odor began spreading through the rapidly moving sleeper bus. Sensing an immediate malfunction, alarmed passengers hurried to alert the driver, urging him to pull over onto the expressway shoulder and inspect the vehicle. However, both the driver and the conductor brushed the matter aside, stating that such smells were routine and frequent inside the vehicle. Despite repeated pleas from commuters, the driver refused to stop or perform any inspection and kept smoking.
Driver Refused to Halt When Flames Erupted
Within a few minutes of those warnings, visible flames erupted from the front section of the bus. As panic erupted and passengers began screaming in terror to be let out, the driver displayed sheer callousness. According to the FIR, he refused to stop the vehicle and told the terrified commuters, "मुझे कोई फ़र्क नहीं पड़ता कि तुम मरो या जियो, मैं बस नहीं रोकूँगा।" Within seconds, the flames intensified and engulfed the entrance and cabin area.
Air Conditioning Blast and Lubricating Oil Fuelled the Blaze
Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire was triggered by a blast inside the vehicle's air conditioning system. The explosion instantly ignited the engine's lubricating oil, accelerating the spread of the flames across the entire cabin. Dense, suffocating smoke trapped those inside the sleeper compartments, rendering emergency escape practically impossible. The blaze resulted in nine fatalities, alongside multiple burn injuries among surviving passengers.
History of Violations and Absence of Fire Safety Equipment
The tourist bus was registered in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh and carried a long history of traffic and regulatory violations. Records indicate outstanding challans totaling 1 lakh 55 thousand rupees issued against the vehicle for various offenses. These previous penalties included infractions for overspeeding, permit violations, dangerous driving, carrying luggage improperly loaded on top of the vehicle, and failure of the driver and conductor to wear designated uniforms. Crucially, the bus completely lacked onboard fire safety equipment, making it impossible to suppress the flames during the initial critical moments.
