Just ahead of the vote counting for the Gorakhpur-Faizabad teachers MLC election in Uttar Pradesh, the Election Commission has executed a major administrative reshuffle by changing the election observer. The commission has relieved IAS officer Abhay Singh from his responsibilities for the poll. In his place, IAS officer Prakash Bind has been appointed as the new observer to oversee the counting process. The counting of votes for this crucial election is scheduled to take place on October 27.
Serious Questions Raised Over Appointment
On October 23, coinciding with the day of polling, rebel Bharatiya Janata Party MLC Devendra Pratap Singh had sent an email to the Election Commission raising sharp questions regarding the appointment of Abhay Singh. In his communication, he leveled allegations that a case was registered against Abhay Singh by the Central Bureau of Investigation in 2019 in connection with an illegal mining case. Devendra Pratap Singh argued how a fair and impartial election could be conducted under the deployment of such an officer, casting doubts on the transparency of the electoral process.
Swift Action by the Election Commission
Taking immediate cognizance of the objections and complaints raised, the Election Commission acted swiftly to uphold administrative fairness. The authority removed Abhay Singh from the observer duty for the Gorakhpur-Faizabad teachers MLC election. To ensure smooth and impartial proceedings, IAS officer Prakash Bind was immediately assigned the role in his place ahead of the vote counting scheduled for October 27.
