In an effort to deliver a lasting remedy to decades of persistent gridlock across Uttarakhand's capital, central authorities and the state administration are collaborating on an expansive urban transit network for Dehradun. Planners have drafted a blueprint for an integrated elevated and tunnel corridor that will directly interconnect two previously proposed elevated road projects over the Rispana and Bindal rivers. This newly envisioned bypass is slated to originate near Max Hospital along Rajpur Road and extend across to Dhoran on Sahastradhara Road. Once operational, the link will allow millions of travellers journeying toward Mussoorie to skip congested commercial hubs and inner arterial roads, sparing local residents the daily ordeal of severe traffic bottlenecks.
New Link to Interconnect Proposed Rispana and Bindal Elevated Corridors
To curb the unceasing vehicular pressure across the capital, central and state authorities had earlier approved two separate elevated thoroughfares along the riverbeds of the Rispana and Bindal rivers. Both major infrastructure works are presently undergoing their concluding technical feasibility evaluations. Once these assessments wrap up, groundwork for executing the road projects will be initiated. In parallel, infrastructure planners realized that linking these two river-bound elevated alignments would unlock superior citywide connectivity. This assessment led directly to the blueprint of a hybrid elevated and tunnel corridor running between Max Hospital and Dhoran to weave the broader transit web together.
Acting as an Effective Outer Ring Road Bypass for the Capital
Engineers at the Public Works Department project that the stretch connecting Max Hospital to Dhoran will serve as far more than a simple connector between two elevated river highways; it will function practically as an outer ring road bypass for Dehradun. Every summer holiday period, festival window, and extended weekend brings tens of thousands of motor vehicles from Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh heading toward Mussoorie, regularly paralyzing traffic along Rajpur Road, Saharanpur Road, and the Haridwar Bypass. The incoming corridor will allow outstation vacationers to circumvent the core municipal perimeter entirely. By segregating external holiday traffic from internal city commuters, vehicular congestion across inner lanes will decline substantially.
Mitigating Emerging Congestion from the Upcoming Purukul Passenger Ropeway
A strategic driver behind accelerating this highway project is the passenger ropeway system presently under construction between Purukul and Mussoorie. Once that ropeway commences passenger operations, vehicular volume directed toward Rajpur Road and adjoining neighbourhoods is projected to surge many times over. Without an alternative bypass established ahead of time, managing vehicular movement across the Rajpur Road corridor would become an insurmountable challenge. Anticipating this impending operational crisis, transport planners resolved to divert Rajpur Road traffic toward Dhoran, enabling automobiles to proceed smoothly toward their destinations without entering narrow, crowded residential sectors.
NHAI to Execute Comprehensive Technical Feasibility Study
Administrative and engineering preparations for the bypass are currently being drafted in close coordination between the National Highways Authority of India and the Public Works Department. Officials have underscored that the hybrid elevated and tunnel corridor concept between Max Hospital and Dhoran remains at an initial planning stage. A thorough technical feasibility assessment will soon evaluate local terrain conditions, specific engineering requirements for elevated spans and tunnels, overall capital costs, and systemic impacts across the broader transit grid. PWD authorities have formally engaged NHAI to steer the study, and final design approvals will hinge entirely upon the technical findings in that upcoming report.
