Student union politics across higher education institutions in Uttarakhand typically focuses on energetic young contenders, but the DSB Campus in Nainital has witnessed an unconventional narrative this season. A mother has formally enrolled as a regular university student on the same campus to actively bolster her son's campaign from within the student community. Beena Chauhan, who serves as the municipal councillor representing Ward Number 10, Nawabi Road in the Haldwani-Kathgodam Municipal Corporation, has taken admission into an MA Political Science program. Alongside attending academic routines, she is actively reaching out to campus voters in support of her son, Bhanu Pratap Singh Chauhan, who is contesting for the post of president.
An Unconventional Dynamic on the Nainital Campus
With the student union elections at DSB Campus proposed for September 29, the electoral atmosphere has intensified. Bhanu Pratap Singh Chauhan's presidential bid received significant momentum as Beena Chauhan established a constant presence across academic departments. Rather than supporting from a distance, she decided that stepping directly into the university ecosystem would help her connect authentically with student voters. Her presence as a fellow student has allowed her to discuss academic concerns and campus issues directly with learners, turning her dual role into a talking point among student groups.
A Remarkable Learning Curve Resumed Thirteen Years After Marriage
Despite her busy commitments as an elected public representative, Beena Chauhan has maintained an ongoing commitment to personal education. Following her marriage in 2001, her formal academic pursuits were paused for nearly 13 years. She resumed her studies in 2014 by completing an MA in Education from MBPG College in Haldwani. Continuing her pursuit of qualifications, she finished her LLB degree in 2025. Now, after an interval of roughly 12 years from her earlier master's program, she has secured admission at DSB Campus Nainital to pursue another postgraduate degree in Political Science.
Chauhan firmly believes that advancing age should never serve as a deterrent to pursuing knowledge. She has affirmed that her academic commitments will remain entirely uninterrupted even after the polling process and election cycle conclude.
Balancing Parental Support and Academic Demands
According to presidential contender Bhanu Pratap Singh Chauhan, his mother holds a BA degree, two distinct master's degrees, an LLB qualification, and two additional diplomas. He noted that her consistent enthusiasm for higher studies naturally motivated her decision to return to campus life once again.
Bhanu Pratap has invested approximately five continuous years working on student welfare and campus politics. Witnessing his persistent efforts, Beena Chauhan felt compelled to stand beside him directly on the ground. Fulfilling the demands of a university student while simultaneously managing her son's nutritional needs and everyday requirements presented substantial logistical hurdles. Nevertheless, she views this undertaking not as an exhausting challenge, but as an opportunity to support her child's aspirations. She emphasized that wholehearted backing from family members provides young individuals with the confidence needed to pursue their dreams, reiterating that her academic journey at DSB Campus will continue long after the ballots are counted.
