Farming practices in the mountains of Uttarakhand are gradually undergoing a notable transformation. Farmers are increasingly moving beyond traditional crops to experiment with alternative fruits and produce. In Bageshwar, Bhuvan Choubey, a resident of Mandalsera and a professional mountaineer by profession, has successfully nurtured an avocado plant right at his home. He grew this plant using an avocado seed, and it is now about three years old.
Fruits Expected In The Fourth Year
Bhuvan Choubey shared his expectation that the plant might bear fruit by its fourth year. However, he noted that the exact timeline for a seed-grown plant to fruit and the precise quality of the yield cannot be predicted with certainty. He explained that the avocado plant can be successfully cultivated in home gardens or agricultural fields, provided the soil conditions are properly managed.
Soil Requirements And Drainage
A crucial factor for growing avocado is selecting soil where water does not accumulate for extended periods. If water stagnates continuously near the roots, it can damage the root system and ruin the plant. In hilly regions, it is ideal to choose locations where excess water drains away naturally. The plant requires adequate sunlight, organic manure, and measured watering as needed. In areas prone to heavy rainfall, setting up proper drainage channels becomes even more critical.
Seed-Grown Versus Nursery Grafted Plants
Growing an avocado plant from a seed is a viable method for home gardening. However, farmers looking to cultivate the crop on a larger commercial scale should procure good quality grafted varieties from a reputable nursery. Seed-grown plants typically take longer to bear fruit, and the harvested fruit may not necessarily match the exact characteristics of the parent fruit.
A Potential Source Of Income
Avocado cultivation has the potential to emerge as a lucrative income source for mountain farmers, though immediate financial returns should not be expected. Revenue depends heavily on the age of the plant, the specific variety, weather conditions, farming expenses, market demand, and sales execution. Market prices for avocados are notably higher than those of common fruits. For instance, online retail prices range between 249 and 338 rupees per kilo, while smaller packaging formats might have different individual fruit pricing.
Nutritional Benefits Of Avocados
Avocados are packed with essential nutrients, including healthy fats, dietary fiber, potassium, magnesium, folate, and vitamins C and K. Consuming this fruit provides the body with beneficial fats and fiber. The fiber content helps maintain a feeling of fullness for extended periods. Farmers in hilly areas like Bageshwar can initially test growing avocados on a small scale at home. If the plant adapts well to the local climate and soil, large-scale commercial farming can be considered. However, before investing in large plantations, farmers must consult local agricultural or horticultural experts regarding soil suitability, weather compatibility, and the right variety selection.
