Haridwar Land Scam: CM Dhami Initiates Strict Disciplinary Actions
In a major move against administrative corruption, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has initiated decisive action regarding the Haridwar Municipal Corporation land acquisition scandal. The Chief Minister on Friday recommended the dismissal of former Municipal Commissioner Varun Chaudhary, an IAS officer. The repercussions of this investigation have also hit several other key officials involved in the transaction.
Alongside Chaudhary, serious disciplinary proceedings have been launched against the then District Magistrate, Karmendra Singh, who is also an IAS officer. This process could lead to major penalties, including demotion or complete removal from his post. Since both Chaudhary and Singh belong to the premier administrative services, the formal recommendations for these severe disciplinary measures are being forwarded to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) for final implementation.
The Multi-Crore Dumping Yard Scam Explained
According to TrendKia, the entire controversy revolves around the acquisition of land meant for a waste dumping yard by the Haridwar Municipal Corporation. The investigation revealed massive financial irregularities. A plot of land measuring 2.3070 hectares, which was valued at approximately ₹15 crore, was purchased at an highly inflated price of ₹54 crore.
This inflated transaction involved widespread violations of regulatory protocols and procedural guidelines. The inquiry established that the officials bypassed standard checks and balances to execute the overpriced purchase, causing a massive loss to the state exchequer.
Zero Tolerance Policy and Earlier Suspensions
Following the confirmation of these serious charges during the inquiry, Chief Minister Dhami had previously suspended seven individuals, including the then District Magistrate, Municipal Commissioner, and SDM, on June 3, 2025. The administrative crackdown continues to unfold with the latest decisions.
In addition to the top IAS officers, former SDM Ajayveer Singh has also faced severe consequences. An adverse entry has been recorded in his service history, and his three annual salary increments have been withheld as a punitive measure.
This aggressive stance aligns with Chief Minister Dhami's stated policy of zero tolerance toward corruption in public office. The strict measures have sent a strong wave of apprehension through the state administration, signaling that fraudulent practices by public servants will meet with uncompromising punishment.
