Weather conditions across Uttarakhand continue to shift dramatically following the active onset of the monsoon season. Continuous downpours have already impacted regions like Pithoragarh, Almora, Pauri Garhwal, Haridwar, and Rudraprayag, leaving several roads submerged and creating flood-like scenarios in multiple areas. In response, the India Meteorological Department has issued fresh warnings for heavy to very heavy precipitation across several parts of the state, accompanied by strong winds, lightning strikes, and potential waterlogging disruptions.
Severe Weather Focus on Dehradun and Tehri
According to meteorological forecasts, districts like Dehradun and Tehri are expected to bear the brunt of the weather system with localized heavy to extremely heavy downpours. Both districts face high probabilities of intense rainfall spells accompanied by frequent lightning activity. Meanwhile, heavy showers are also predicted in Pauri, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, Champawat, Nainital, and Haridwar. The remaining parts of the state are similarly expected to experience persistent stormy weather and sharp spells of rain.
Capital City Status and School Closures
Persistent rainfall over recent days has pushed local water bodies in Dehradun to dangerous levels. The sudden surge in water levels of the Rispana and Susuwa rivers caused water to enter surrounding residential pockets. Weather models indicate that strong winds and heavy thunderstorms will persist, which is expected to drive temperatures down to a high of 26°C and a low of 23°C. In view of these safety concerns, the district administration has ordered a one-day closure for all schools ranging from class 1 to 12.
Travel Advisory and Landslide Warnings
Continuous downpours significantly elevate the risk of landslides, blocked hill routes, and sudden water accumulation, particularly in elevated terrains where several roads have already faced disruptions recently. Authorities have clarified that rather than enforcing a blanket statewide mandate, decisions regarding school shutdowns are being implemented dynamically at the district level. Travelers planning journeys through the hilly terrain are strongly advised to check prevailing weather updates before setting out.
