Indiscriminate exploitation of forests across the fragile Himalayan terrain of Uttarakhand over recent decades has led to severe shifts in the local weather and microclimate. The ecological damage caused by human interference with nature is now manifesting through recurring catastrophes, ranging from the devastating Kedarnath disaster to the alarming structural cracks emerging across Joshimath and widespread landslides on mountain slopes. Amid growing geological instability, a recent scientific study has raised serious alarms regarding future environmental hazards. The report reveals that a steep decline in Uttarakhand's forest canopy, which plays a vital role in protecting the terrain and maintaining cooler temperatures, is directly accelerating the crumbling of Himalayan mountains.
Over 25 Percent Forest Canopy Depleted in 25 Years
A research report conducted by the National Institute of Technology Rourkela in Odisha highlights that the forest canopy across disaster-affected zones in Joshimath and its vicinity has shrunk by more than 25 percent over the past 25 years. The findings of this comprehensive study were also presented at the prestigious European Geosciences Union conference. Researchers observed that the depletion of tree branches and foliage cover has severely impaired the natural absorption of rainwater into the soil, drastically weakening the stability of mountain slopes.
Dehradun-based environmentalist Ashish Garg explained that the study identifies deforestation, unbridled construction along slopes, and climate change as the primary drivers behind the shrinking forest canopy. When the protective overhead shield of leaves and branches thins out, torrential raindrops strike the sloped land directly. This direct impact drastically increases hydraulic pressure on the topsoil while preventing root systems from holding the soil firmly together, resulting in accelerated soil erosion, frequent slope failures, and rapid mountain degradation.
Worsening Crisis in Joshimath and Rain Impact
In the Joshimath region of Chamoli district, initial signs of landslides and ground subsidence began emerging as early as 2018. However, unprecedented torrential rainfall in October 2022 rapidly accelerated the rate of slope degradation. By 2023, the situation escalated into a severe crisis, creating widespread geological instability that left massive fissures in homes, roads, and agricultural fields.
This environmental degradation is further corroborated by the Forest Survey of India 2023 report. According to the FSI 2023 report, Very Dense and Moderately Dense forest categories across four states, including Uttarakhand, have degraded into the Open Forest classification. Environmentalist Ashish Garg noted that the reduction in Himalayan forest canopy correlates directly with an increase in landslides and subterranean movements. Historically, dense canopies dissipated the kinetic energy of heavy rain, allowing water to trickle down slowly, preserving soil fertility and preventing surface erosion. Without this natural canopy buffer, intense rainfall events and cloudbursts hit the bare terrain with full force, triggering sudden and catastrophic damage.
Ecological Vulnerability and Urgent Conservation Needs
The Himalayan belt of Uttarakhand is geographically classified as highly sensitive to seismic events and geological disasters. The loss of more than 25 percent of its forest canopy over the 25 years since the state's inception has severely disrupted its delicate ecological equilibrium. This ongoing forest degradation has damaged natural hydrological cycles and compromised the structural integrity of hill slopes.
Environmental experts warn that unless immediate action is taken, including large-scale afforestation, strict regulation of mountain construction activities, and robust forest conservation measures, the population residing in these mountainous regions will face an increasingly dire threat to their lives, homes, and future survival.
