The historical and spiritual legacy of Dehradun shares an enduring bond with Sikh tradition, highlighted by an intervention that shaped the region about 340 years ago. Following the sudden demise of Baba Ram Rai, a severe administrative and spiritual conflict erupted over his seat and estate. During this turbulent phase, Baba Ram Rai's wife, Mata Punjab Kaur, dispatched an urgent appeal to Paonta Sahib, seeking the intervention and support of the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh.
Origin of Dehradun's Name and the Succession Crisis
According to Prem Singh, a sewadar associated with Jatha Akali Baba Fateh Singh Dal, the roots of this episode trace back to earlier differences surrounding the Guru Gaddi. Following those disagreements, Baba Ram Rai departed Punjab and chose to settle in the Doon Valley. Setting up a dedicated encampment with his followers, his settlement became known as a 'dera', which ultimately gave the region its enduring name, Dehradun.
However, after Baba Ram Rai passed away unexpectedly, serious disputes arose regarding the leadership and control of the establishment. Certain masands within the court attempted to seize administrative power and establish unlawful dominance over the establishment. Facing this aggressive power struggle, Mata Punjab Kaur reached out directly to Guru Gobind Singh at Paonta Sahib through a written message, requesting his help to restore order.
Journey from Paonta Sahib with Over 500 Followers
Responding promptly to Mata Punjab Kaur's message, Guru Gobind Singh set out for Dehradun. Historical accounts indicate that he arrived around October 3 or October 4, accompanied by a retinue of more than 500 devoted followers. Upon reaching Dehradun, the Guru directly addressed the escalating crisis and intervened decisively.
Guru Gobind Singh dismantled the ongoing conspiracies within the court, disciplined the rogue elements, and upheld righteousness, justice, and decorum. This crucial backing gave Mata Punjab Kaur the strength and authority needed to administer the affairs of the court independently for many years thereafter. Once order was established and necessary administrative steps were finalized, Guru Gobind Singh made his journey back to Paonta Sahib.
Three-Day Commemoration to Mark 340th Anniversary
To honor the 340th anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh's arrival in Dehradun, Jatha Akali Baba Fateh Singh Dal is organizing a major commemorative event in the city for the very first time. Commencing on October 2, the three-day gathering will feature a Gurmat Samagam, an organized motorcycle rally, and a traditional Khalsai Mohalla procession.
Organizers emphasized that the primary goal of this landmark gathering is to educate younger generations about the profound connection between Guru Gobind Singh and the city of Dehradun. Devotees and attendees from across Uttarakhand as well as from other territories and abroad are slated to take part in the commemorative programs.
