A shocking act of daylight violence in West Bengal's Medinipur district has triggered widespread panic and raised grave concerns over local public safety. A Class 12 student was shot directly in the chest in the Rail Colony locality of Kharagpur on Wednesday. The youth collapsed on the road bleeding profusely immediately after being hit, causing panic among shoppers and residents in nearby commercial and residential hubs.
Ambushed While Pausing at a Food Stall
The injured victim has been identified as Akshay Jha, who is enrolled in Class 12 at a local school. At the time of the shooting, Akshay was traveling on a motorcycle driven by a local resident named Sagar Kumar, riding as the pillion passenger. The duo pulled over near an eatery located within Ward Number 20 to grab something to eat.
Moments after they stopped, armed assailants arriving on a motorcycle suddenly targeted them. The attackers opened fire without hesitation, pumping a bullet straight into Akshay's chest before fleeing the scene. The sudden gunfire left onlookers stunned and created immediate chaos across the bustling neighborhood.
Critical Patient Transferred to Kolkata for Advanced Care
Bystanders and locals rushed the heavily bleeding youth to a nearby local hospital for urgent medical attention. After assessing the critical nature of the bullet wound, attending doctors recommended transferring him to a specialized hospital in Kolkata for advanced surgical and intensive care. Law enforcement authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, looking into why a school student was singled out in such a brazen manner and working to track down the fleeing assailants.
Previous Violent Clash Involving Students at Newtown Mall
Violent attacks involving students in the state have surfaced in recent weeks as well. A comparable incident unfolded at the Downtown Mall in Newtown, Kolkata, stemming from a dispute over a relationship. During that encounter, a private university student identified as Sourik Paul launched a knife attack on two of his own classmates, Manu Mondal and Ishan Paik, while they were having coffee on the first floor of the mall.
The knife assault led to severe injuries to both victims and triggered widespread panic inside the shopping complex. Alert security personnel and visitors managed to overpower the attacker on the spot and hand him over to authorities. Both injured youths were admitted to a private medical facility, while personnel from the Techno City police station took the accused student into custody.
