A senior government medical officer in Kanpur ended his life with his personal firearm on Sunday following a domestic quarrel at his residence. The deceased, identified as 47-year-old general surgeon Sandeep Singh, was stationed at a Community Health Centre in Kanpur Dehat. The fatal incident took place at Blossom Apartments located in the Nirala Nagar locality, where he shot himself in the chest using his licensed revolver. Family members rushed him to Regency Hospital immediately after the gunshot, but attending doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Fatal Incident Unfolded Near Home Shrine
Initial inquiries indicate that an intense argument between the surgeon and his wife preceded the fatal step. Following the dispute, Sandeep moved toward the prayer area inside the residence, positioned himself before the home shrine, and pulled the trigger. His wife, Kanchan, rushed to the spot upon hearing the sound of gunfire and found him lying unresponsive in a pool of blood. Alarmed relatives gathered at the scene and immediately transported him for emergency medical intervention, but his injuries proved instantly fatal.
Police Investigation and Forensic Assessment
Senior police officials and forensic specialists inspected the crime scene shortly after receiving information. Commissioner of Police Raghubir Lal noted that domestic friction between the couple appeared to be the primary catalyst behind the extreme action, adding that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted into all aspects. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Deependra Nath Choudhary confirmed that law enforcement personnel seized the licensed weapon from the apartment and dispatched the body for post-mortem examination.
Marital History and Background Details
Sharing background information about the deceased, his cousin Mohit Singh stated that Sandeep had married twice. His first marriage took place in 2007 with an MBBS doctor based in Kanpur, which eventually concluded through a mutual consent divorce in 2018. The couple had a son from that union, who is currently 12 years old. Subsequently, in 2019, Sandeep entered into a second marriage with Kanchan, a homemaker originally hailing from Kasganj. Sandeep resided at the Nirala Nagar apartment with Kanchan, their four-year-old daughter, and a younger infant son, whereas his parents and younger brother live separately in Paradevanpurwa within the Lal Bangla neighbourhood.
Family Interventions and Final Conversation
The victim's father, Raj Bahadur Singh, recounted that he had spoken on the phone with his son around 9.30 PM on Sunday night to inquire about his well-being. According to the father, persistent friction over minor routine issues had plagued the relationship ever since the second wedding. Raj Bahadur Singh noted that family elders frequently had to step in to mediate recurring household disagreements between the couple. Authorities have recorded statements from family members as forensic evaluation and formal inquest proceedings continue.
