Authorities in Kolkata have stepped up their vigilance and initiated strict measures against commercial establishments following a recent deadly fire incident that resulted in the loss of nine lives in the city. In response to the tragedy, the Kolkata municipal body has formally served show-cause notices to 25 hotels and restaurants located in central Kolkata. These establishments have been strictly instructed to implement all necessary fire safety and prevention measures immediately. The administration has warned that failure to comply with these safety mandates will lead to the permanent closure of the defaulting hotels and eateries.
Strict Warnings Issued Over Fire Safety Standards
Municipal officials stated that the show-cause notices issued to the 25 hotels and restaurants in central Kolkata serve as a final warning that non-compliance with fire safety protocols will result in shutdown orders. Many of these properties had previously been sent notices regarding safety lapses. The latest notices require these businesses to explain why closure orders should not be issued against them, given that they pose a severe threat to the lives and safety of guests and visitors. Prior to this crackdown, a devastating fire broke out in a five-storey building in central Kolkata, claiming the lives of nine people. Several small hotels were operating within that multi-storey building.
In the wake of that disaster, the state government ordered a comprehensive state-wide safety audit of fire prevention arrangements across all buildings. The primary objective is to prevent similar tragedies and ensure strict adherence to safety codes in all hospitality and commercial establishments across the state.
Hearing Opportunities and Evacuation of Unsafe Properties
Kolkata Municipal Corporation officials clarified that the establishments facing show-cause notices will be given a formal opportunity to present their case before the Divisional Fire Officer during an official hearing. Due to non-compliance with mandatory fire safety regulations, authorities took swift action by evacuating 13 establishments on Friday. Earlier, on August 21, 16 establishments were also ordered to clear out their premises.
Officials emphasized that further administrative and legal actions will depend strictly on the outcome of the hearings and whether these establishments promptly implement all required safety upgrades.
Dedicated Inspection Teams and Ministerial Visits
To ensure thorough oversight, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has established dedicated inspection teams tasked with examining safety arrangements in every hotel. A specific team has been assigned to each administrative borough across the city. Meanwhile, Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul conducted an inspection visit to several closed hotels located in central Kolkata's bustling Free School Street and Marquis Street areas. During the visit, the minister issued a stern warning that uncompromising strict action will be taken against anyone flouting safety norms.
