A violent clash erupted between Left-wing student organizations and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Jadavpur University in West Bengal on Wednesday night. The confrontation originated over the convening of a General Body (GB) meeting and quickly escalated into physical violence, resulting in injuries to multiple students. Given the severity of the brawl, several injured individuals required immediate medical attention and were moved to a nearby hospital. The incident has left the university campus in a state of high tension, prompting security forces to step in to prevent further escalation.
Dispute Over the Validity of the GB Meeting
The flashpoint of the conflict was a General Body meeting summoned jointly by the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and other Left-leaning student outfits. As the meeting commenced, members of the ABVP staged a strong protest against its proceedings. The ABVP argued that since there is currently no elected student parliament or union functioning at Jadavpur University, there exists no legitimate basis or authority to call such a General Body meeting. The disagreement over constitutional protocol quickly degenerated into heated arguments, followed by pushing, shoving, and physical violence. ABVP leaders claimed that Left activists launched a targeted physical attack on their members, including the ABVP Jadavpur University unit president. Conversely, Left-wing student groups refuted these claims, accusing the ABVP of deliberately disrupting the academic atmosphere and instigating violence against students attending the meeting.
Local MLA Intervenes as Protests Reach Police Station
Upon receiving news of the late-night violence, local MLA Sarbari Mukherjee reached the Jadavpur University campus to assess the situation. The legislator accompanied the injured students to the Jadavpur police station, demanding immediate registration of complaints and strict action against the perpetrators. Following their arrival at the police station, ABVP activists staged a vocal demonstration outside the premises to press for police intervention. Recognizing the potential for further unrest, law enforcement agencies deployed police personnel around the university gates and surrounding areas to maintain order and prevent fresh clashes.
Allegations of Stone Pelting, Arson, and Outside Interference
Both factions have leveled grave accusations against each other regarding the sequence of events. ABVP alleged that members associated with SFI, DSO, and DSF orchestrated the assault and targeted specific office bearers within the university. On the other hand, Left student organizations countered by alleging that the ABVP brought in outside elements to stir up trouble on campus. Left activists further reported incidents of stone pelting inside the university grounds and arson outside. During the chaos, a group of students remained trapped inside Aurobindo Bhavan as tensions simmered outside the building through the night.
'Jadavpur Chalo' Call Sets the Stage for Thursday Standoff
The campus environment remains extremely fragile following the midnight confrontation. Taking a firm stance against the violence, the ABVP has announced a major 'Jadavpur Chalo' campaign scheduled for Thursday morning at 11:00 AM. Simultaneously, Left-wing student groups are mobilizing their cadres to organize counter-demonstrations on campus. With both rival student groups preparing for aggressive mobilization on Thursday, the local administration and police forces remain on high alert to avoid further violent face-offs.
