An aviation emergency unfolded on Tuesday evening when a cargo plane belonging to K2 Airways disappeared in the skies near Karachi. According to the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA), the aircraft, a Boeing 737 cargo freighter, was en route from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, to Karachi. During the flight, the crew reported significant issues with the onboard navigation system, raising immediate alarms regarding the safety of the flight.
The Moments Leading to Loss of Contact
According to PAA, the flight crew alerted ground controllers about technical difficulties at 9:18 PM local time. The Karachi Area Control Centre (ACC) attempted to provide guidance and assistance to the distressed aircraft. However, shortly after the alert, the situation escalated; radar monitoring showed the plane rapidly losing altitude and performing an abrupt change in direction. Within minutes of these erratic maneuvers, all communication with the aircraft was severed.
Extensive Search and Rescue Mission
Authorities stated that the final contact with the aircraft occurred approximately 155 nautical miles west of Karachi. Since that point, the plane has vanished from radar displays and has not responded to any further radio attempts. Immediately following the loss of signal, the Pakistan Airports Authority activated its rescue coordination center. A wide-scale search and rescue operation is currently underway in the sea, involving the Pakistan Navy and other relevant agencies, specifically targeting the area where the last signal was recorded.
Five Crew Members Aboard
The PAA has confirmed that five crew members were aboard the plane at the time of the incident. While the authority has officially acknowledged the count, the identities of these crew members have not yet been released to the public. Furthermore, officials have not provided any information regarding potential survivors or the current status of those on the aircraft. Investigations into the cause of the disappearance are in progress, with officials noting that while navigation system failures were reported early on, the definitive cause remains unknown pending the conclusion of the search operations.
