With the five-match T20 international series between India and the West Indies locked at 2-2, Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel stepped forward to strongly back his bowling group ahead of the decider at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Responding to recent scrutiny directed at the attack, Morkel urged observers to consider the heavy toll that non-stop travel and mental exhaustion take on elite athletes.
The Weight of a Relentless International Calendar
Highlighting the punishing schedule of modern international cricket, Morne Morkel explained that Indian players have been moving from one commitment to another without sufficient recovery windows. In recent weeks, members of the squad featured in bilateral assignments, travelled to Japan for the Asian Games, and immediately transitioned into the high-intensity T20I rubber against the West Indies.
Morkel pointed out how rapid transitions between commitments place immense strain on the players. Several cricketers returned from the Asian Games straight into the West Indies series, had to travel to New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and flew back the very next morning to resume training for the upcoming fixtures. Emphasising this relentless routine, Morkel reminded everyone:
These players are humans too.
The Value of Mental Rest and Recovery
According to the bowling coach, elite execution on the field depends heavily on a clear and refreshed mind. When cricketers face an endless cycle of flights, team meetings, and high-pressure matches, decision-making under stress naturally becomes more challenging. Morkel called for restraint and empathy when evaluating performances, stressing that physical fitness alone cannot compensate for cognitive overload.
He noted that providing players with proper downtime, adequate sleep, and space to unwind between fixtures is critical for sustaining peak performance. When bowlers feel rested, their ability to execute tactical plans, control line and length, and adapt to difficult phases of play improves significantly. Overlooking mental tiredness only creates unrealistic expectations around consistent match-winning displays.
Tackling Flat Pitches in the Series Decider
The playing conditions throughout this series have consistently favoured batters, leaving little margin for error for the bowlers. With flat surfaces offering minimal assistance, taking regular wickets has required exceptional persistence and discipline. Playing the series finale at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, a venue widely known for high-scoring encounters, will present another severe test for both bowling units.
Morkel shared that he held focused discussions with his bowlers, instructing them to brush aside previous mistakes and approach crucial moments with clarity. His directive to the unit is to maintain composure, bowl intelligently, and stick to their preparation under intense pressure. With the series on the line at 2-2, whichever team manages the decider's high-stakes moments more effectively will walk away with the trophy.
