Federal investigators with the FBI have taken a 34-year-old woman into custody over allegations of conducting espionage activities on behalf of China within the United States. Authorities confirmed that Wanying Z., a resident of Irvine, California, was detained at Los Angeles International Airport while preparing to board a flight destined for China. Prosecutors have formally charged her with acting as an unregistered foreign agent on American territory.
Surveillance Mission Directed From Seattle
According to US Attorney Bill Esely, the defendant traveled to Seattle in 2025 on assignments directed by Chinese officials. Her objective during this operation involved tracking and surveilling an immediate relative of a Taiwanese government official. Investigators established that her presence in Washington state was part of an organized effort to keep tabs on key political targets and their personal circles.
Transmission of Photos and Vehicle Records
Investigative documentation reveals that the accused captured photos, recorded videos, and logged license plate numbers belonging to the targeted individual, relaying this surveillance material back to officials in China. The formal charges note that she coordinated the entire trip alongside an associate, adopting specific operational measures designed to conceal their movements and shield their tracking efforts from detection.
