When unwavering determination meets a deep commitment to one's roots, even the most improbable dreams turn into reality. The journey of Bihar-born social entrepreneur Sharad Vivek Sagar stands as a powerful testament to this conviction. After completing his higher education in the United States, surrounded by lucrative corporate career prospects and luxurious living standards, he chose to return home to drive meaningful change. At the time, his peers were baffled by the decision, with some even dismissing it as impractical.
Sharad possessed a clear vision aimed at empowering Indian youth and opening doors for deserving students from underserved regions. As he prepared to leave the United States, his American peers questioned why anyone would walk away from such elite career prospects. In response, Sharad delivered a witty yet deeply confident remark, saying he would only set foot in America again when the President personally invited him. While it seemed like lighthearted banter at the moment, his relentless grassroots work turned that bold assertion into history just a few years later.
Walking Away from Manhattan Corporate Trajectories
Having pursued International Relations at Tufts University, Sharad had an array of prestigious corporate opportunities lined up across the bustling high-rises of Manhattan. While many international scholars choose to build comfortable lives abroad, Sharad felt an urgent calling to channel his knowledge toward solving educational disparities back in India. He chose the challenging path of institution-building over corporate comfort.
Reflecting on that pivotal chapter, Sharad recently shared a video on social media recalling his parting conversation with his friends. He noted that the rooted Bihari inside him had told his peers that he would only return upon a direct presidential summons. It was not mere bravado, but an authentic expression of faith in the educational mission he was championing. That faith culminated in an extraordinary phone call in September 2016.
An Official Invitation from the White House
On the morning of September 16, 2016, while engaged in his grassroots educational initiatives in West Bengal, Sharad received an official invitation from the White House. The summons was for 'South by South Lawn: A White House Festival of Ideas, Art, and Action', a prestigious gathering hosted by President Barack Obama. Held on October 3, 2016, the event convened exceptional creators, social innovators, and global change-makers. Notably, Sharad was the solitary Indian invited to this gathering that year.
During his visit, Sharad spent 9 memorable hours at the White House, which included an invaluable 90-minute interaction with President Barack Obama. For Sharad, walking through those historic corridors was not just a personal milestone, but a validation of the dedicated work he had initiated during his teenage years.
Founding Dexterity Global and Fostering Grassroots Leadership
Back in 2008, at just 16 years of age, Sharad laid the foundation of Dexterity Global. The core mission of the enterprise was to identify and nurture leadership capabilities among students from rural, tier-2, and tier-3 regions, connecting them with world-class higher education platforms. He recognized early on that talent is universal, but opportunities are often concentrated in urban hubs.
Today, Dexterity Global empowers thousands of young minds to access top-tier educational institutions and pursue ambitious public leadership roles. Sharad Sagar's story illustrates that true accomplishment lies beyond large salary packages and corporate titles, reminding young leaders that the highest form of success is using one's talents to uplift communities and build the nation.
