Community healthcare workers in Arunachal Pradesh are adopting automated digital tools to track the growth and vital signs of infants during routine domestic check-ups. The Arunachal Pradesh Health and Family Welfare Department, teaming up with Wadhwani AI and the District Health Society of East Siang, has formally launched an artificial intelligence application designed to upgrade Home-Based Newborn Care services across the region. Known as the Shishu Mapan application, this Newborn Anthropometry platform allows frontline personnel to evaluate infants right at their doorsteps without transporting bulky weighing scales and measuring tapes.
Frontline Workers Undergo Intensive Three-Day Training
To prepare community teams for field operations, a comprehensive training programme was conducted from September 29 to October 1 across three designated administrative blocks: Ruksin, Pasighat, and Mebo. A total of 108 ASHAs alongside 15 ASHA Facilitators completed the hands-on instruction. The sessions were supervised by regional health leadership, including the District RCH Officer, the District ASHA Nodal Officer, the District Community Mobilizer, and Block Community Mobilizers, ensuring seamless coordination between ground workers and administrative supervisors.
Brief Video Scan Captures Core Anthropometric Parameters
The core technology, engineered by Wadhwani AI, is targeted specifically at monitoring babies during their initial 42 days of life. Frontline workers simply record a 15 to 20-second video clip of the baby through the smartphone application. From this single scan, the embedded algorithms extract crucial growth indicators, including body weight, length or height, head circumference, chest circumference, and mid-upper arm circumference. This non-invasive assessment brings hospital-grade physical evaluation directly to remote villages, helping identify underweight or vulnerable infants early.
Paperless Home Visit Tracking Strengthens Service Delivery
Beyond body measurements, the initiative integrates a digital logging mechanism for Home-Based Newborn Care schedules. Frontline staff can now record observations, home visits, and health alerts electronically on their devices. Moving away from cumbersome physical logbooks streamlines daily administrative chores, ensures records are instantly accessible to programme managers, and strengthens the overall supervision of child health initiatives in rural pockets.
Rollout Follows Multi-District Validation in Arunachal Pradesh
The deployment in East Siang follows rigorous field validation tailored to local conditions. The software initially underwent contextual testing across five districts: Namsai, Papum Pare, East Siang, West Siang, and Changlang, ensuring the computer vision algorithms accurately account for regional demographic traits and varied field settings. Building on those findings, health authorities are now expanding the integrated application across East Siang and West Siang to measure its long-term operational feasibility, accuracy, and ease of adoption among field teams.
