Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply following new military developments involving Yemen and key shipping lanes. Iranian-backed Houthi rebels stated on Monday that two districts within the Yemeni capital of Sanaa were targeted in airstrikes, pinning direct responsibility on Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that two Indian nationals are missing after a commercial oil tanker was struck by a drone near the Strait of Hormuz.
Airstrikes Hit the Yemeni Capital
The conflict between the Houthi movement and Saudi Arabia has intensified in recent days. Houthi authorities reported that the Hamdan and Thawra districts of Sanaa came under aerial bombardment around midnight on Monday. The group's media center highlighted the timing of the raids but provided limited additional details while blaming Saudi Arabia for the operation. These strikes occurred while the Houthis continued launching projectiles toward airport infrastructure inside Saudi territory. Saudi authorities did not issue an immediate statement responding to these allegations.
Commercial Tanker Struck and Indian Sailors Missing
In maritime shipping lanes, the situation turned critical as the Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced that two Indian crew members went missing after a drone collided with a commercial vessel named MT Petro Dolphin. The incident occurred on Sunday in the Strait of Hormuz region while a total of 11 Indian nationals were aboard the tanker.
In a separate maritime incident, a Marshall Islands-flagged tanker identified as MT Valthera was struck by an unknown object, resulting in a fire on board. Fortunately, authorities confirmed that all 11 Indian sailors aboard the Valthera remained safe and unharmed.
Diplomatic Efforts and Regional Security Concerns
Indian diplomatic missions have stepped up intervention. The Indian Embassy in Muscat is closely coordinating with Omani authorities and ship management firms to locate the missing crew members. Denouncing the maritime attacks, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that repeated assaults on commercial shipping lines are deeply concerning and threaten to worsen an already volatile regional environment.
Diplomatic pressure is also mounting from neighboring states. Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the leadership of the United Arab Emirates, called for a united Gulf response to protect regional states from attacks orchestrated by Iran and its aligned factions. Gargash asserted that Tehran and its allies miscalculated by viewing Arab Gulf nations as vulnerable links amid wider confrontations involving the United States and Israel. Posting on social media, Gargash emphasized that all regional states share an indivisible security framework and that attacks targeting Saudi Arabia directly undermine the stability of the entire Gulf cooperative network.
