Top ministers and senior officials from the governments of Assam and Meghalaya convened a crucial joint meeting at the Koinadhara State Guest House in Guwahati to restore safe interstate transit and prevent further escalation in the wake of the August 19 violence in Shillong. The discussions, which spanned over three hours, centered on the aftermath of the unrest, specifically addressing targeted attacks on vehicles bearing Assam registration plates and the severe hardships encountered by travelers and tourists.
During the deliberations, the Meghalaya administration expressed sincere regret over the untrustworthy turn of events and assured its counterpart in Assam that uncompromising legal action would be pursued against all perpetrators. Officials informed the gathering that the president, vice-president, and general secretary of the Khasi Students’ Union had already been taken into custody under the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act. Authorities confirmed that 15 FIRs have been formally registered so far, and five masked individuals allegedly involved in targeting Assam-registered automobiles have been successfully identified.
Special Investigation Team and Safe Evacuation Updates
To track down every individual connected to the violence and ensure their prosecution, the Meghalaya government announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team specifically tasked with probing the attacks on vehicles from Assam. Both states thoroughly reviewed ongoing transit protocols, revealing that more than 3,770 Assam-registered vehicles have already been safely escorted out of Meghalaya territory.
Meanwhile, the Assam Control Room logged 54 distress calls involving 175 citizens requiring immediate evacuation support, which included passengers traveling across 22 private vehicles and five tourist carriers. Concurrently, the Meghalaya Control Room handled 379 distress calls, facilitating safe passage for callers seeking assistance. The majority of stranded motorists and travelers have successfully crossed vital transit choke points, including the Umiam Lake corridor.
Forty-Eight Hour Window to Clear Remaining Stranded Traffic
Authorities noted that approximately 400 to 500 vehicles previously held up across Meghalaya have also moved past potential danger zones. Both state delegations agreed that any remaining passengers or vehicles still awaiting passage would receive secure escorts within the next 48 hours through a dedicated logistical exercise tailored for returning tourists.

To cement long-term operational synergy, officials agreed to institute a direct communication channel between the Inspector General of Police for Assam's Special Branch and the Inspector General of Law and Order for Meghalaya. In a move to resolve border friction proactively, the two state governments resolved to establish permanent district-level joint committees. These panels will comprise the Deputy Commissioners of Nongpoh and Kamrup Metropolitan alongside equivalent police leadership from both jurisdictions to handle everyday administrative hurdles.
A separate specialized committee will also oversee tourist transport, featuring transport secretaries from both states alongside representatives from tourist vehicle syndicates to balance regulatory oversight with shared economic interests in tourism. To assist affected citizens, authorities activated dedicated helpline channels, including a WhatsApp contact at +91 810 14 888 and a landline number at 0361-23 81-511 10, alongside an upcoming online support forum.
Reiterating its commitment to regional stability, the Meghalaya government affirmed that it bears full responsibility for safeguarding the security and well-being of all visitors and vehicle operators traveling from Assam and beyond throughout their stay within the state.
