Assam board pushes back exam prep deadline for Class 10 and 12 students citing floods, census

The Assam State School Education Board has extended regular classroom teaching for Class X and XII students after floods and census work disrupted the academic calendar, a move likely to delay the HSLC and HS Final exam schedules.

Class X and Class XII students in Assam preparing for their 2027 board exams will now get extra weeks of regular classroom teaching, after the state board concluded that this year's disruptions had eaten into instructional time.

Floods and census work disrupted the academic calendar

In a notification issued on Monday, the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) said recent severe flooding in several districts, combined with the state's ongoing census exercise, had slowed down regular teaching in schools. The board's notification stated that "there is every likelihood that the course contents of class X and XII will not be completed" within the earlier deadlines, effectively admitting that the syllabus was running behind schedule because of these disruptions.

New deadlines for regular classes

Previously, Class X coursework was to be finished by the first week of February 2027, while Class XII coursework had a deadline of February 28, 2027. The board has now pushed both dates forward. Regular classes for Class X will continue until February 22, 2027, and teaching for Class XII students will carry on until March 8, 2027, according to the notification. The board said the extra time is meant to give students more classroom exposure and to ensure their preparation is not hurt by the ongoing floods and census-related disruptions.

What it means for the HSLC and HS Final exams

Because regular teaching has been extended, the timetable for the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and the Higher Secondary (HS) Final Examinations will need to be adjusted accordingly. The board indicated that the final examination schedule will be worked out only after taking the extended teaching period into account, meaning exam dates for both classes are likely to shift later than originally planned, with a formal schedule to be announced separately in due course.
