The Assam state cabinet has implemented a stringent service mandate barring state government personnel from entering into polygamous marriages. Under the newly endorsed directive, any government employee discovered to have more than one spouse will face immediate dismissal from public service. This measure establishes a zero tolerance approach toward plural marriages within state administrative ranks.
Revision of Service and Discipline Framework
To enforce this measure legally across administrative departments, the administration has formally enacted amendments to the Assam Services and Discipline Rules. This statutory revision equips authorities with clear regulatory grounds to take direct punitive action against personnel violating marital conduct codes, ending any administrative ambiguity regarding disciplinary proceedings.
Disqualification from Future Public Employment
The punitive consequences of the cabinet directive extend well beyond the immediate loss of one's current post. State authorities confirmed that individuals terminated under these amended regulations will also face permanent disqualification from securing any future government employment across state departments, severely penalizing any breach of the conduct norms.
Official Declaration by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma
Addressing the outcome of the cabinet deliberations, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma outlined the state administration's decisive move to reform institutional conduct standards. Emphasizing the resolution, Sarma stated, "If any Assam government employee is found to have entered into multiple marriages, they will be dismissed from service." The step aligns with broader administrative policies aimed at curtailing plural marriage practices and restricting official privileges.
