Guwahati is preparing for a major visual and structural transformation of its overhead utility infrastructure. The Assam government has officially approved a massive municipal upgrade valued at Rs 177 crore, designed specifically to transition messy overhead electrical and communication lines into an organized underground network. This key developmental initiative will target five critical corridors within the city, establishing a modern, clutter-free approach to urban planning and safety.
Transforming the City Skyline and Enhancing Aesthetics
On Saturday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared details of the newly approved project. He explained that the physical construction and installation work will cover approximately 18 km of busy municipal roadways. The primary goal of this extensive infrastructure overhaul is to eliminate the dangerous and unappealing webs of tangled, sagging wires that currently drape across several congested stretches of Guwahati.
By replacing these existing overhead utility networks with secure underground conduit systems, the state administration hopes to dramatically improve the city's visual environment. The selected corridors will receive a much cleaner, safer, and more organized appearance. This initiative is being positioned as a core component of a broader, long-term blueprint to modernize the municipal systems of Assam's premier commercial and cultural hub.

This underground cabling project directly addresses these challenges by securing the delivery of essential public services. Under the strategic plan, overhead electrical power lines and commercial telecommunication cables will be permanently shifted into structured subterranean channels.
The total estimated budget of over Rs 177 crore will fund the entire physical transition. Project implementation is scheduled to begin immediately after completing the necessary administrative, tendering, and planning procedures. This transition will not only make the city visually cleaner but will also increase resilience against storm-related power outages.
