Assam Police has significantly scaled up its statewide campaign targeting child marriage, with recent operations leading to a total of 524 arrests and 441 registered cases as of 5 pm on Tuesday. Law enforcement agencies continue to conduct widespread operations across multiple districts to curb the illegal practice.
Chief Minister Outlines Strict Stance
Taking to the social media platform X, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated the state administration's firm position against the practice. He emphasized that authorities will not spare anyone linked to this grave offense and remain committed to ridding Assam of underage marriages entirely.
Targeted Raids Across Multiple Districts
The latest enforcement figures stem from ongoing police operations conducted in various localities, including Chapar, Bilasipara, Jogighopa, and Tamarhat. In Chapar, a special operation resulted in the arrest of five individuals over their alleged involvement in underage marriage cases. The accused were identified as Abdulla, Sahidul, Zahidul, Anwar Hussain, and Sahinur Ali, with local police confirming that further investigations are actively underway.
Overnight Operations in Bilasipara
Meanwhile, authorities in Bilasipara executed overnight raids across several locations, apprehending eight people allegedly connected to child marriage offenses. Those taken into custody include Asker Ali, Hazrat Ali, and Hafizul Islam from Kathaldi village, alongside Kanser Ali from Khudigaon, Osimuddin Sheikh from Suapata, and Farizul Haque from Kadamtala.
Broader Government Strategy
These latest law enforcement actions form a key component of Assam's wider initiative to eradicate child marriage through systematic arrests, strict legal measures, and community awareness programs. The state government initially escalated this crackdown in 2023, deploying successive rounds of police operations against individuals accused of solemnizing, facilitating, or entering into underage unions.
